    Birding/Nature: Sweetwater Wetlands & Silverbell Lake - 2/24/2026

    Cost:  $10

Sweetwater Wetlands and Silverbell Lake (formerly Christopher Columbus Park) are two of the top birding areas in the Tucson metro area. This water-rich streamside riparian zone supports a huge variety of wildlife, including dragonflies, raccoons, hawks, bobcats and dozens of other species that make the wetlands their full- or part-time home.  Recent sightings include an Orange-crowned Warbler, a Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, a Cassin's Kingbird and a Spotted Sandpiper, just to name a few. The various types of waterfowl are always a treat!

Paths are flat and either decomposed granite or gravel.

If you have binoculars, you may want to bring them along. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. A hat and water are suggested.

Lunch will be at Brother John's Beer, Bourbon and BBQ, located at 1801 N Stone Avenue in Tucson.  For information and menu, click here.

Meet at the Photography Club lobby at 8:30 AM for departure at 8:45 AM.  Please wear your GVR Photography or Camera Club badge, if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate amount to reimburse your driver.

GVR requires that every person participating in club's field trips must sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography Club before the trip departs if you haven't already signed one.

Denise LeCount-O'Brien will be our trip leader.   For questions email Denise at rurt2dede@gmail.com or call 309-830-0177.

Last date to cancel for a refund is February 12, 2026.

Where the Wild Things Are with Photographer Vincent Musi -- Tuesday 02/24/2026

    Trip Cost:   Free

"Since you guys are so persistently wonderful in your support of and connection to the Fox, I’d love to offer your group complimentary tickets to attend a fantastic event next Tuesday evening:  a presentation by legendary National Geographic photographer, Vince Musi." -- Jordan Wiley-Hill, Outreach & Education Manager, Fox Tucson Theatre.

The normal admission for this event is $24, but it's free just for us!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please register before midnight this Sunday, February 22nd. Any unused seats will be returned to the Fox Tucson Theatre.

In this enlightening talk, Vincent Musi shares highlights from more than 30 years, traveling the world for National Geographic, documenting a changing planet—from close to home, along the iconic Route 66, to what it’s like to live at the base of a volcano, to ancient Sicilian mummies.  One story that captured his heart took readers “Inside Animal Minds” (NGM cover story, March 2008) and included a deep study of birds, apes, dolphins, and dogs, revealing a wide range of emotions and communication skills. With his trademark dry humor, Vincent takes us into the world of animal cognition and on a tour of some of the world’s most unusual pets, including a hilarious romp through his The Year of the Dogs project. You may never look at man’s best friend the same way again!

Vincent J. Musi has been a regular contributor to National Geographic since 1993, covering a vast range of subjects from the Texas Hill Country to the legendary Route 66, the ancient crypts of Sicily, life at the base of volcanoes, and mummies. Vince is also the longtime host of Nat Geo’s Photographic Seminar, now renamed the Storytellers Summit, that brings together inspirational and influential photographers, writers, filmmakers, illustrators, and journalists, once a year, to celebrate the art of storytelling to inspire change. He has contributed to TIMENewsweekLifeFortune and The New York Times Magazine. A specialist in animal portraits, Vince’s recent work includes projects on domestication, intelligence, and cognition.

    Mescal Movie Set--Friday 2/27/2026

Trip Cost $22 (Please note important information below)

The trip leader will be sending out additional information and questions regarding this trip.  Please add your trip leader's contact information for both the email and phone number into your contact lists so you don't miss out on any important information.

Grab your cowboy hat and boots and mosey on over to the world-famous Mescal Movie Set! The 1880’s cinematic town was home to the movie Tombstone, The Quick and the Dead, and over 80 other westerns. Notable actors such as Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Lee Marvin, and Clint Eastwood have walked its dusty streets.

"An 1880s Western Town, Surrounded by the High Desert Plains of Southeast Arizona and the Rincon Mountains." The film history of the Mescal area dates back over 70 years with scenes from Winchester 73 with Jimmy Stewart, The Big Country with Gregory Peck, and Cimarron with Glenn Ford. The physical set was built as a town in 1968-1969 for Monte Walsh, starring Lee Marvin and Jack Palance. This movie mirrors the current situation with the Mescal Set. An aging cowboy realizes the west he loves will soon be gone, and there is no room for cowboys like him. Released the same year was the Western comedy Dirty Dingus Magee with the legendary Frank Sinatra. Another Hollywood legend graced the set when Elizabeth Taylor filmed Poker Alice.

A succession of movies followed, including The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean starring Paul Newman, The Outlaw Josey Wales with Clint Eastwood, and Tom Horn with Steve McQueen. The 1990s had major big-budget productions. Tombstone starred Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, and many other notables such as Charlton Heston, Harry Carey Jr., and narration by Robert Mitchum. It has become a cult classic and easily the most quoted western of all time. The Quick and the Dead followed with Hollywood "A-Listers" Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, and a very young Leonardo DiCaprio.

Country music fans will recall the 1986 remake of Stagecoach starring the Highwaymen, including Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristopherson. Mescal was also used in The Gambler with Kenny Rogers.

The Mescal Set was an alternative town set for many episodes of your favorite western TV series, including Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Magnificent Seven, and Little House on the Prairie. Fans will also remember it as the town of Sweetwater in The Young Riders series.

Mescal was also a popular site for TV Movies, including The Sacketts, with Tom Selleck, Glenn Ford, and Sam Elliott, Maverick with James Garner, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, and Buffalo Soldiers with Danny Glover.

As of Valentine's Day 2021, Mescal is no longer attached to the Old Tucson Studios group as a secondary film site. The set is now on its own and building its notoriety as the world-famous Mescal Movie Set. Kartchner Ventures is thrilled to give Mescal a well-deserved facelift and is dedicated to helping bring the film industry back to Southern Arizona. Please join us in celebrating such a western treasure!

Contact the guide Danny Valenzuela at 602-568-5759 or dvsundevil@gmail.com with any questions.

Tombstone - The "Town Too Tough to Die" -- Thursday 3/12/2026

    Cost is $30

Tombstone was founded in 1877 by a prospector named Ed Schieffelin. Ed stayed at Camp Huachuca (wa-chu-ka) as part of a scouting expedition against the Chiricahua (chir-i-cow-uh) Apache. During his time there he would venture out into the wilderness “looking for rocks”, all the while ignoring the warning about the native Apache. Soldiers at the camp would tell him, “Ed, the only stone you will find out there will be your tombstone”. He did find his stone near Goose Flats and it was Silver. Remembering the warnings from the soldiers at Camp Huachuca and using his sly sense of humor he named his first mine The Tombstone.

Before long word spread about the Arizona silver strike and soon prospectors, cowboys, homesteaders, lawyers, speculators flocked to the area in droves. In 1879 a town site was laid out on the nearest level spot to the mines, known at the time as Goose Flats (also spelled Glats), and was appropriately named “Tombstone” after Ed Schieffelin's first mining claim.

This field trip allows you to step back in time and immerse yourself in the rugged charm of Tombstone, where the old west comes to life. Walk the same streets once walked by Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and other legendary figures from the Wild West.

Other than Boot Hill Graveyard, all the activities are located in a 4-block area of Tombstone, so bring comfortable walking shoes.

Our first stop will be at Boot Hill Graveyard to visit more than 250 graves. Buried are outlaws with their victims, suicides, and hangings, legal and otherwise, along with hardy citizens and refined element of Tombstone’s first days.

At 10:30am we will visit the OK Corral. There, after a short theatre presentation, you will witness the reenactment of the “Gunfight at the OK Corral”.  After the gunfight we will view a video about the history of Tombstone narrated by Actor Vincent Price, as he tells Tombstone's story from Geronimo's Apaches to modern times.

Entrance to the Boot Hill Graveyard and the OK Corral Gunfight and Tombstone Historama are included in the field trip fee.

After the Tombstone Historama you are free to catch a bite to eat at one of Tombstone's restaurants or eateries.

At 1pm, we will join back up to enjoy Old Tombstone Western Theme Park Stunt Show, also a pre-paid event.

After the Stunt Show, you are free to walk the streets of Tombstone where you can indulge in unique shopping, delicious dining and other shows and tours on your own.

Some interesting exhibits to view on your own as time allows.  Prices my change before our arrival date.

Birdcage Theatre Self-Guided Tour ($16.50) Approx 30 min

    Wyatts Saloon Theatre -$10

Wyatt Earps Oriental Saloon & Theater - $10

    Stagecoach Rides--$15

Gunfighter Hall of Fame – Free if open

    Tombstone Trolly Tour (20 min) - $15

You are free to stay as long as you wish to enjoy the many experiences of Tombstone.

Meet at the Photography Club at 7:15 AM for carpooling, departure at 7:30. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $20.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

Fox Tucson Theatre Behind the Scenes -- Wednesday 3/18/2026

    Trip Cost:   $18.00

From its opening in 1930, the Fox Tucson Theatre became the "crown jewel" of downtown Tucson's entertainment world and the most revered "Classic Movie Palace" for over 40 years until its closing in 1974. After sitting empty for 25 years and following a six-year, $14+ million rehabilitation, the theatre reopened on New Year's Eve 2006. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its unique "Southwestern Art Deco" decor as well as its world-class acoustics, the theatre also features the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ, which debuted in 2021 after a meticulous 17-year restoration.

Find more information on the Fox Tucson Theatre here.

There are no restrictions on photography equipment or what can be photographed or video'd. In fact, you are encouraged to share your photos or videos with Jordan in support of the theatre's outreach efforts.

Important Accessibility Note: There are lots of stairs involved in the tour, and unfortunately there's no elevator in this historic building. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour particularly difficult.

    NOTICE:

This is a walking tour that lasts about 2 hours. All participants need to be responsible for an assessment of their mobility and health issues relating to field trips. Some trips may not be appropriate, but you must make that determination. However, the trip leader may deny participation in a specific field trip to anyone deemed not suitably prepared or able to walk with the group.

Be sure to have your GVR card with you for each and every field trip. Without it, you won't be allowed to go on the trip. No refunds will be granted for failure to comply with this requirement.  To protect GVR and club member benefits, GVR has implemented a new process that requires each field trip participant to come into the club and scan his/her GVR card to confirm eligibility. We no longer have the option of typing in your name or GVR number – only the physical GVR card will do.

We will no longer meet in the parking lot. We will meet in the GVR Photography Club where you will scan your GVR card confirming your eligibility to go on the trip. We’ll also review important/late-breaking information, pair up drivers and riders, provide driving directions, and give participants a chance to visit the restrooms prior to departure. Again, be sure to have your GVR card with you.

The club strives to provide several field trips specifically designed for members with physical limitations.

To participate in this event, you must be a member of the GVR Photography Club and GVR.

Oracle State Park with Ranger Michael -- Thursday 4/9/2026

Cost:  $10 (State Park Annual Fee) and $10.00 for the driver if you are carpooling.

Oracle State Park is a beautiful 4,000-acre wildlife refuge located in the northern foothills of the Catalina Mountains in Arizona. It offers a variety of activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails. The park is also a designated International Dark Sky Park, making it an excellent spot for stargazing.

The park features over 15 miles of trails, including a selection of the Arizona Trail. It also serves as a Center for Environmental Education, offering a selection of interactive programs. The historic Kannally Ranch House, located within the park, provides a glimpse into the area's history.

Ranger Michael Bain will begin the tour with a 30-minute presentation/demonstration where he will go over settings & techniques for landscape & wildlife photography. Then we will hike a 1.2-mile nature trail, making stops along the way to practice.

The park's diverse habitats, ranging from oak-woodland to desert grassland, supports a rich variety of wildlife. You can encounter various mammals, such as Coues white-tailed deer, Bobcats, Javelinas, Gray foxes, Cottontail rabbits, Coyotes and Mountain lions (occasionally).  Birders will enjoy Scrub jays, Gambel’s quail, Great horned owls, Cooper’s hawks, Red-tailed hawks, Harris’s hawks, Gila woodpeckers, Hooded orioles and many others, depending on the time of the year.

Binoculars are a must if you don't have a long lens. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes, hat and shoes. Participants need to be comfortable walking on a trail hike of mostly flat to slightly uneven terrain with rolling hills.

    Bring water

Bring your lunch so you can spend as much time as you want observing birds or enjoying the interactive programs. For those wanting to top the day off at a local restaurant, we will be dining at the Ore House Hilltop Tavern.

Meet at the Photography Club lobby at 8:00 AM for carpooling.  If you are going to carpool with someone, a minimum donation for gas should be $10.00 (168-mile round trip). We will leave promptly at 8:30 for Oracle State Park.

GVR requires that every person participating in Photography Club Field Trips must sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You may sign the waiver at the Photography Club or the morning of the trip, if you have not completed one already.

Elvira Bayless will be our leader and Ranger Michael will be our guide.  For questions, email Elvira at eabayless@gmail.com. If you must cancel on the morning of the trip, call Elvira at 541-480-9388 so we won't be waiting for you.
