Sunset with the Bats Tuesday 08/26/2025

Trip Cost: Free, but please register to attend

Join us at sunset as we watch thousands of bats come out of their man-made roosts below the Campbell Avenue Bridge in Tucson to feed!

Compared to other places, we have many bat species living in and around Tucson. The most common are the Mexican free-tailed bats. Those roost in the thousands, and 99.9% of the time, if you guessed you saw a Mexican free-tailed bat fly out from beneath a bridge, you’d be correct.

The large roosts we see under the bridges are maternity roosts. The females arrive here in April already pregnant. Over the summer, the females give birth to their young – one pup per female in June or July. In the fall, usually around September, they fly back to Mexico with their offspring. In the meantime, the females and their pups come out around dusk to eat. With the sunset as a natural backdrop, it’s an amazing site to see. And the Campbell Avenue Bridge is one of the most popular viewing spots.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 3:15 PM for carpooling, departing at 3:45 PM. Comfortable shoes, water, a tripod and a folding chair are suggested. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge, if available. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

We’ll stop first at Villa Peru, 1745 East River Road, Suite #165 in Tucson for an optional no-host dinner. Check out their dinner menu here.

We’ll depart Villa Peru by 5:45 PM for the short drive to the Campbell Avenue Bridge. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to set up and get ready for nature’s amazing show. We never know precisely when the bats will start heading out, so we’ll be sure to get there in ample time. The “show” should end shortly after dusk, at which time we’ll head back to Green Valley.

Tom Parker will be our trip leader. Contact Tom at 618-304-1456 or email at tparker324@aol.com with any questions. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

GVR requires that every person participating in club's field trips must sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography club before the trip departs.

If you need to cancel, please contact the Field Trip Facilitator Monica Parker at 618-304-1164 or email mparker582@aol.com. We may have people on the wait list to take your place.

Even though this is a free trip, please call Tom and/or Monica as soon as you know you cannot make the trip.

    NOTICE:

All participants need to be responsible for an assessment of their mobility and health issues relating to field trips. Some trips may not be appropriate, but you must make that determination. However, the trip leader may deny participation in a specific field trip to anyone deemed not suitably prepared or able to walk with the group.

The club strives to provide several field trips specifically designed for members with physical limitations.

In order to participate in this event, you must be a member of the GVR Photography Club and GVR.

Alfie Norville Gem & Mineral Museum 8/27/2025

The University of Arizona Alfie Norville Gem & Mineral Museum is a non-profit organization through the University of Arizona Foundation dedicated to providing public education and the preservation of its extensive natural history collection.

The museum moved in 2022 and now occupies one wing of the Historic Pima County Courthouse in downtown Tucson. The museum has 12,000 square feet of exhibit space with three major galleries: Mineral Evolution, Arizona Gallery, and the Gem Gallery. The museum features interactive, touchable, and digital content (video, photos, audio, and visuals). The collection is worldwide in scope while emphasizing minerals from Arizona and Mexico.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 8:45 AM for departure at 9:15 AM. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or GVR Camera Club nametag if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

We’ll convoy to the El Presidio Parking Garage, 165 West Alameda Street, which is an easy walk to the museum. Be sure to bring your parking ticket with you – the museum has arranged with the Southern Arizona Heritage and Visitor Center for our parking to be validated (more on that later).

At the museum, we’ll be met by Jordan Halter, Guest Services Coordinator, who’ll provide a brief overview to help get us oriented. From there, you’ll have about two hours to explore the museum at your own pace. Museum staff and docents will be available throughout to answer questions and bring the various displays to life. There are no restrictions on photography equipment or what can be photographed. For flash photography, the museum just asks us to be mindful of other guests as the flash tends to travel around the gallery bouncing off the reflection from the display cases.

We’ll go to the Perche' No Italian Bistro at 11:30 AM for an optional and leisurely no-host lunch. The trip will resume at 1:00 PM.

Following lunch, we’ll return to the Historic Pima County Courthouse and visit the Southern Arizona Heritage and Visitor Center. Be sure to stop by the front desk to have your parking validated (otherwise, parking will be about $7.00). While there, you’re welcome to check out their exhibits, learn about area attractions, and browse their gift shop. The Visitor Center conducts a free tour at 2:00 PM if you’re interested. While at the courthouse, be sure to check out the Dillinger Courtroom and the January 8th Memorial. You can also return to the Gem & Mineral Museum – it’s open until 4:00 PM.

Tom Parker will be our trip leader. Contact Tom at 618-304-1456 or tparker324@aol.com with any questions. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

If you need to canceI, please contact Field Trip Facilitator Monica Parker at 618-304-1164 or email mparker582@aol.com. On the day of departure call Tom.

Last refund date is August 20, 2025.

Sunset at the Mescal Movie Set--8/30/2025

    Trip Cost $22

A sunset tour is scheduled at the Mesal Movie Set, offering a chance to photograph the set with a scenic sunset backdrop.  We will be having an early dinner in Benson at Magaly's Restaurant prior to going to the movie set.

The Mescal Movie Set is a well-known filming location designed to resemble a town from the 1880s. It has served as the backdrop for films such as Tombstone, The Quick and the Dead, and more than eighty other westerns. Actors including Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Lee Marvin, and Clint Eastwood filmed scenes there.

Located in Southeast Arizona near the Rincon Mountains, Mescal has a film history spanning over 70 years. Its set was constructed between 1968-1969 for Monte Walsh, reflecting changing times in the West. Notable films shot here include Winchester 73, The Big Country, Cimarron, Dirty Dingus Magee, and Poker Alice, featuring stars like Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, Glenn Ford, Frank Sinatra, and Elizabeth Taylor.

A succession of movies followed, including The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean starring Paul Newman, The Outlaw Josey Wales with Clint Eastwood, and Tom Horn with Steve McQueen. The 1990s had major big budget productions. Tombstone starred Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, and many other notables such as Charlton Heston, Harry Carey Jr., and narration by Robert Mitchum. It has become a cult classic and easily the most quoted western of all time. The Quick and the Dead followed with Hollywood "A-Listers" Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, and a very young Leonardo DiCaprio.

The 1986 remake of Stagecoach, featuring the Highwaymen—Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson—was filmed at Mescal. Mescal was also a filming location for The Gambler with Kenny Rogers. The Mescal Set served as an alternative town set for several western TV series, such as Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Magnificent Seven, and Little House on the Prairie. It was also used as the town of Sweetwater in The Young Riders series.

Mescal was a filming location for several TV movies, such as The Sacketts (Tom Selleck, Glenn Ford, Sam Elliott), Maverick (James Garner, Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster), and Buffalo Soldiers (Danny Glover).

Mescal Movie Set is now an independent site and is no longer associated with the Old Tucson Studios group as a secondary filming location. The set operates separately, and Kartchner Ventures is involved in supporting efforts to develop the film industry in Southern Arizona.

Please join us for the Photography Club's first sunset tour of this western treasure!
