Multimedia SIG  - Mondays at 10 am

Kevin May and Todd Taylor, moderators

The Multimedia Special Interest Group meets in the Classroom at the GVR Photography Club in the Santa Rita Springs Social Center.

During the Winter (October through April) we will meet every Monday in the Large Classroom. There will be no Zoom for Multimedia SIG meetings. Meetings will be recorded and placed on YouTube following the meeting.

A typical Multimedia SIG meeting lasts about one hour and members can share videos that they have put together and get feedback and constructive suggestions on ways that they can improve their videos. The group also helps work on issues that members might have with various image and video editing software. Besides all of that, we also have a lot of fun and laughs, so please join us!

In order to participate in this event, you must be a member of the GVR Photography Club and GVR.

Black and White SIG - Scheduled Tuesdays @ 9:30 AM

The Black & White Special Interest Group - Wendell Werner, moderator.

Specific Tuesdays @ 9:30am during the summer (Check Schedule)

We will be meeting live in the Photography Club and by Zoom.

The Black & White Special Interest Group is a meeting of those club members who enjoy the special qualities of black & white (or more generally called “monochrome”) photography. Members bring their images for viewing and comments by the group.

Discussions on editing techniques, as well as on composition and lighting are also a part of the meeting.

The question might be asked “Why are we interested in black and white images when even the basic point and shoot digital cameras can produce very good color photographs?”  The answer is: there are some images which have more visual impact when rendered in black and white.  These images are those which use the interplay between light and shadows to emphasize texture or shapes within the composition. An example is shown above.

Typically, the photographs shown at our SIG have been produced as color images in a digital camera and converted to black and white using one or more of the popular photo editing software packages.

    Wildlife Photography SIG

Meetings will be held alternate Fridays at 9:30 AM beginning Jan 5, 2024

The Wildlife Photography Special Interest Group (SIG) is designed for members who wish to improve their Wildlife Photography skills. The SIG will consist of discussions, videos, handouts, and short presentations of equipment utilization, post-processing techniques, settings and the best practices to use in the varying photography situations found in nature. Environmen/habitat, particular habits, behavior and preparation for a photo shoot involving different species of wildlife will be discussed. Specific methods or techniques associated with a variety of wildlife will be stressed.

Participant's photos will be shared with the group, and suggestions or recommendations from the other participants will be shared if requested by the photo presenter. All will be done in a friendly & supportive manner.

The major focus of the SIG is both the enjoyment and enhancement of the skills associated with wildlife photography. All club members are welcome, no matter their photography skill level. The key is the interest and desire of each participant to have fun and improve as a photographer.

You must be a member of GVR and the GVR Photography Club to attend this event.

    On Assignment SIG

So far, it's been decided that the SIG will offer participants some assigned shooting topics or themes. For, example, one assignment  might be portraits and another something as esoteric as Blue. The SIG will meet every two weeks, giving participants time to shoot photos on the assignment topics. Participants can critique, evaluate and comment on photos that they  wish to share.

Here are the rest of the season's meeting dates and assignments:

    • February 22nd - Music
    • March 7th - Pets
    • March 21st - Leading Lines
    • April 4th - Black and White
    • April 18th - Your Yard

We  will try to schedule some learning activities that support the Assignments on the alternate Thursdays on an instructor availability basis.

Register for "On Assignment" to be on the mailing and notification list for the  SIG.

    Tucson Auto MuseumTM 2/28/2024

    Trip Cost $12.00

The mission of the Tucson Auto Museum is to showcase the very old (their Model T is almost 110 years old), the iconic (hard not to fall in love with their mid-century classic Cadillacs, Desotos, and Packards), the sporty (picture yourself behind the wheel of one of their classic Corvettes, Thunderbirds, or Mustangs), the unique (ever see a car with just one door—and it is in the front?!) and more. You can even go Back to the Future in their shiny, stainless steel Deloreon. Are you a fan of Batman? Come check out the bat cave with 3 iconic vehicles from Batman Returns. Tucson Auto Museum is a venue for enthusiasts as well as those who do not yet realize that they are car people to appreciate over a century of automotive evolution and innovation. They always have between 65 and 75 classic, iconic, and unique autos inside their 20,000+ square foot facility—plus lots of interesting automobilia like signs and gas pumps from yesteryear.

Meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 8:30 AM for carpooling, departure at 8:45. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

Tucson Windows and Doors Walking Tour 3/3/2023

    Cost - FREE!!

This FREE trip will be led by Patty Ferguson and Linda Gregory.  Linda has experienced this trip at least a dozen times since 2009.  Much has changed, but some has stayed the same.  What has changed are the very strict parking regulations which is why this trip is being held on a Sunday.  We are requesting that you carpool due to very limited parking.

We will visit several areas in the iconic Barrio Viejo.  You will see how gentrification has affected this barrio with many new buildings amidst the older ones that may have been there for a hundred years or more.  There are several wonderful murals scattered throughout the barrio.  You’ll see Carmen Teatro in its early stages of renovation, a heart-warming sign that the old is not totally lost.

We will then move to the El Presidio district to see two more areas, one of which contains the most photographed door in Tucson.  Due to having no parking available to visitors, we will drive through the last street.

We’ll lunch at the El Charro Café (at your expense), the oldest continuously family run Mexican restaurant in the US.  Patty and Linda can attest to the wonderful food available there.

Following lunch you can decide whether you want to walk back to the area we drove through for your photographs.

Meet at the Photography Club parking lot at 8:30 AM, and depart at 8:45 AM. Expected return time of 3:30 is approximate.  $5.00 is an appropriate amount for those carpooling, for the driver.

GVR requires that every person participating in club's field trips sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography Club before the trip departs if you haven’t signed one earlier in the year.

If you want to be included in the El Charro reservation, please send your request to Linda at lsgregaz@gmail.com and label as Reservation.

If you need to cancel please contact the Field Trip Coordinator, Lynn Rozema, at lrozema51@gmail.com or call 719-351-5193.  We may have people on the waiting list to take your place.

Last day to cancel registration is February 25, 2024.

The Oasis Sanctuary & Forever Home Donkey Rescue  3/19/2024

    Trip Cost $20.00

This trip combines visits to two unique animal rescue facilities north of Benson, Arizona.

Established in 1997, The Oasis Sanctuary is a unique avian rescue and life-care facility, dedicated to providing permanent care, shelter and rehabilitation for companion parrots for which other rehoming options do not exist. In particular they are a refuge for exotic birds such as parrots, cockatoos, macaws and other Psittacine birds. Many of the birds in their care have “special needs”, little or no social skills or have suffered physical and/or emotional abuse resulting in undesirable psychological behaviors. The Oasis is often all that stands between life and death for these beautiful, sentient and endangered companion birds.

Upon arrival, we’ll divide into two groups, with each group given a 3-hour tour by Oasis Sanctuary staff. There are seven enclosures where the birds are not caged, and you’ll have ample time on the tour for some great photo opportunities. There’ll also be time for you to interact with birds that are so inclined. We’ll provide roasted peanuts in the shell for you to give as treats, so you may end up with a new avian best friend.

Find more information about the Oasis Sanctuary here. https://the-oasis.org/

We’ll take time out between 12:30 and 1:00 PM for a brown bag lunch at the Oasis (bring your favorite snack and beverage).

From there, we will make our way to the Forever Home Donkey Rescue. Forever Home has provided a loving home for donkeys since 1998. Many of these intelligent & beautiful animals have health issues because of neglect in their past. Others are in their 20s and 30s, requiring extra care and special feeds to keep them healthy.

The donkeys are roaming on 10 acres, and you can take pictures to your heart's content. If the donkeys don't want to come see you, you can walk within the Sanctuary to see them. If you have trouble walking, the Sanctuary will take you to them on a four-wheeler bike. Caretakers will be available to answer any questions and tell you the donkeys' stories--if you could understand what the donkeys have to say. The tour will last about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Find more information about Forever Home Donkey Rescue Sanctuary here.  https://foreverhomedonkeyrescue.com/

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes (preferably close-toed), a hat and sunscreen, bring water, and be sure to pack a lunch or snacks.

For those driving, make sure you have a full tank of gas and good tires before setting out. The freeway exit is approximately 25 miles (40 minutes) from the Oasis Sanctuary, and the road to the Sanctuary turns from paved asphalt to a hard-packed dirt surface that can be a bit rough in stretches. Also, cell phone service can be spotty to nonexistent once you start heading north from Benson.

Meet at the Photography Club upper parking lot at 7:30 AM for carpooling, departure at 7:45 AM. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

Tom Parker will be our trip leader. Contact Tom at 618-304-1456 or tparker324@aol.com with any questions. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

GVR requires that every person participating in club's field trips must sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography club before the trip departs.

Last date to cancel for a refund is March 12, 2024.

If you need to cancel please contact the Field Trip Coordinator Lynn Rozema at 719-351-5193 or email lrozema51@gmail.com.  We may have people on the wait list to take your place.

The best free entertainment in Arizona

    Todd Taylor – Showtime Coordinator

SHOWTIME is here and it is live at the Desert Hills GVR Center!!  Yes, really in person, so if  you remember where it is we will look forward to seeing you there!

    Watch for additional details.

Showtime was initiated a few years ago to provide an opportunity for members to display short “slide programs” of their work to the community of photographers in the Camera Club and our guests.  Members are invited and encouraged to submit their programs.

And by the way….we are in desperate need of programs for our monthly Showtime presentations.  It is easy – take some of your photos from a field trip or other event and put them into a program.  Use Windows Photos, iMovie or some other application to assemble your photos and add music of your choice.

In order to participate in this event, you must be a member of Green Valley Recreation.

    Tohono Chul Tour 4/10/2024

    The trip cost is $20.00

Located off Ina Road near Oracle Road in Tucson, Tohono Chul has been designated one of the World's ten Best Botanical Gardens by Travel and Leisure magazine. Set on 49 acres of lush desert, visitors stroll along winding paths past soaring saguaros and through themed botanical gardens.  Various art and garden exhibits reveal the unique quality of the Sonoran region and many spots provide a quiet retreat sprinkled throughout the lush grounds.  We will be welcomed by docents who will guide and acquaint us with the bistro, gift shops, and exhibit galleries throughout the gardens.

Wear closed-toe shoes so you may enjoy the views of the Santa Catalina mountains as you walk comfortably along the trails.  We also suggest wearing sunscreen and a hat and bringing a water bottle.  There are water fountains designed to refill water bottles at several places throughout the garden.

We are welcome to stay after the tour to visit the gift shop or take more photos (birds, Sonoran Desert ecology, ethnobotany, riparian habitat and Saguaro).

Lunch is NOT included but is available at the Garden’s Bistro or at restaurants nearby.

For more information about the Gardens, visit:  http://tohonochulpark.org/
