The Multimedia Special Interest Group meets in the Large Classroom at the GVR Photography Club in the Santa Rita Springs Social Center.

During Winter (November through April) we will meet every Monday in the Large Classroom. There will be no Zoom for these Multimedia SIG meetings, however, meetings will be recorded and placed on our YouTube channel following the meeting.

A typical Multimedia SIG meeting lasts about one hour and members can share videos they have put together and get feedback and constructive suggestions on ways they can improve their videos. The group also helps work on issues that members might have with various image and video editing software.

Besides all of that, we also have a lot of fun and laughs, so please join us!

In order to participate in this event, you must be a member of the GVR Photography Club and GVR.

    Black & White SIG - Tuesdays @ 9:30 am

    Moderator: Wendell Werner

    Location: Ansel Adams Room

    Date/Time: Tuesdays at 9:30 am

From November 2025 to April 2026, we will be meeting every week. There will be NO SCHEDULED ZOOM meetings for these sessions, so come on out to the Club and join us!

The Black & White Special Interest Group is a meeting of those club members who enjoy the special qualities of black & white (or more generally called “monochrome”) photography. Members bring their images for viewing and comments by the group.

Discussions on editing techniques, as well as on composition and lighting are also a part of the meeting.

The question might be asked “Why are we interested in black and white images when even the basic point and shoot digital cameras can produce very good color photographs?”  The answer is: there are some images which have more visual impact when rendered in black and white. These images are those which use the interplay between light and shadows to emphasize texture or shapes within the composition. An example is shown above.

Typically, the photographs shown at our SIG have been produced as color images in a digital camera and converted to black and white using one or more of the popular photo editing software packages.

    Birding/Nature: Silverbell Lake - Tuesday 03/24/2026

    Cost:  $10

Silverbell Lake (formerly Christopher Columbus Park) is one of the top birding areas in the Tucson metro area. This water-rich riparian zone supports a huge variety of wildlife, including dragonflies, raccoons, hawks, bobcats and dozens of other species that make the park their full- or part-time home.  Recent sightings include an Orange-crowned Warbler, a Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, a Cassin's Kingbird and a Spotted Sandpiper, just to name a few. The various types of waterfowl are always a treat!

Paths are flat and either decomposed granite or gravel.

If you have binoculars, you may want to bring them along. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. A hat, sunscreen and water are suggested.

Lunch will be at Brother John's Beer, Bourbon and BBQ, located at 1801 N Stone Avenue in Tucson.  For information and menu, click here.

Meet at the Photography Club lobby at 8:30 AM for departure at 9:00 AM.  Please wear your GVR Photography or Camera Club badge, if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate amount to reimburse your driver.

Gammons Gulch Movie Set and Museum AND Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary -- Tuesday  3/31/2026

    Trip Cost $30

    IMPORTANT CHANGES:

Gammons Gulch.  We'll take a trip back in time to the days of the old west as you walk down the streets of an old west town.

Gammons Gulch, a western town and movie set, was built by Jay and Joanne Gammons. It includes a saloon, blacksmith shop, jail, assay office, church, gallows, barber shop, and much more. The buildings are not just facades; they are actual buildings with vintage furniture, dishes, lightning, tools, etc. from the territorial era.  It is truly a museum.

Gammons Gulch has served as a setting for many western movies, western-themed weddings and other events, with the surroundings and settings meeting the specifications of the actual decor of the time.

We will start with a self-guided tour of the town after which you'll be able to take photos of the interior and exterior settings at your leisure. Pictures may be taken for personal use only.

A little imagination is all you need to complete this memorable "step back in time" experience. You'll marvel at the detail and authenticity that went into the building of this movie set and museum.

Note: Due to lack of availability, western actors will not be a part of the field trip this year.

There is no food served at Gammons Gulch so bring water and a lunch.  You can eat lunch in the saloon or outside in a nice picnic area.

It is highly suggested that you wear closed-toed shoes, brimmed hats, use sunscreen, and bring bottled water.

Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary.  After lunch we will take a 2–3-minute drive to Forever Home. The Sanctuary has provided a loving home for donkeys since 1998. Many of these intelligent & beautiful animals have health issues because of neglect in their past. Others are in their 20s and 30s, requiring extra care and special feeds to keep them healthy.

The donkeys are roaming on 10 acres, and you can take pictures to your heart's content. If the donkeys don't want to come see you, you can walk within the Sanctuary to see them. If you have trouble walking, the Sanctuary will take you to them on a four-wheeler bike. Caretakers will be available to answer any questions and tell you the donkeys' stories--if you could understand what the donkeys have to say. The tour will last about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Contact Danny Valenzuela at 602-568-5759 or dvsundevil@gmail.com with any questions.

Meet at the Photography Club at 8:15 AM for departure/carpooling at 8:30 AM to Gammons Gulch. GVR is requiring that every person participating in club's field trips sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography Club before the trip departs if you haven't already done so. We expect to leave the Donkey Sanctuary at approximately 3 pm.

If you need to cancel, please contact the Field Trip Co-Chair Lynn Rozema at lrozema51@gmail.com We may have people on the wait list to take your place.

Last refund date is March 24, 2026.

Oracle State Park with Ranger Michael -- Thursday 4/9/2026

Cost:  $10 (State Park Annual Fee) and $10.00 for the driver if you are carpooling.

Oracle State Park is a beautiful 4,000-acre wildlife refuge located in the northern foothills of the Catalina Mountains in Arizona. It offers a variety of activities, including hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails. The park is also a designated International Dark Sky Park, making it an excellent spot for stargazing.

The park features over 15 miles of trails, including a selection of the Arizona Trail. It also serves as a Center for Environmental Education, offering a selection of interactive programs. The historic Kannally Ranch House, located within the park, provides a glimpse into the area's history.

Ranger Michael Bain will begin the tour with a 30-minute presentation/demonstration where he will go over settings & techniques for landscape & wildlife photography. Then we will hike a 1.2-mile nature trail, making stops along the way to practice.

The park's diverse habitats, ranging from oak-woodland to desert grassland, supports a rich variety of wildlife. You can encounter various mammals, such as Coues white-tailed deer, Bobcats, Javelinas, Gray foxes, Cottontail rabbits, Coyotes and Mountain lions (occasionally).  Birders will enjoy Scrub jays, Gambel’s quail, Great horned owls, Cooper’s hawks, Red-tailed hawks, Harris’s hawks, Gila woodpeckers, Hooded orioles and many others, depending on the time of the year.

Binoculars are a must if you don't have a long lens. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes, hat and shoes. Participants need to be comfortable walking on a trail hike of mostly flat to slightly uneven terrain with rolling hills.

    Bring water

Bring your lunch so you can spend as much time as you want observing birds or enjoying the interactive programs. For those wanting to top the day off at a local restaurant, we will be dining at the Ore House Hilltop Tavern.

Meet at the Photography Club lobby at 8:00 AM for carpooling.  If you are going to carpool with someone, a minimum donation for gas should be $10.00 (168-mile round trip). We will leave promptly at 8:30 for Oracle State Park.

GVR requires that every person participating in Photography Club Field Trips must sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You may sign the waiver at the Photography Club or the morning of the trip, if you have not completed one already.

Elvira Bayless will be our leader and Ranger Michael will be our guide.  For questions, email Elvira at eabayless@gmail.com. If you must cancel on the morning of the trip, call Elvira at 541-480-9388 so we won't be waiting for you.

If you need to cancel, please contact Lynn Rozema, Field Trip Coordinator at 719-351-5193 or email at lrozema51@gmail.com as soon as know you cannot attend. On the day of the trip, contact Lynn so we have time to contact people on the wait list to take your place.

    NOTICE:

This is a walking tour that lasts about 2-3 hours. All participants need to be responsible for an assessment of their mobility and health issues relating to field trips. Some trips may not be appropriate, but you must make that determination. However, the trip leader may deny participation in a specific field trip to anyone deemed not suitably prepared or able to walk with the group.

Be sure to have your GVR card with you for each and every field trip. Without it, you won't be allowed to go on the trip. No refunds will be granted for failure to comply with this requirement.  To protect GVR and club member benefits, GVR has implemented a new process that requires each field trip participant to come into the club and scan his/her GVR card to confirm eligibility. We no longer have the option of typing in your name or GVR number – only the physical GVR card will do.

We will no longer meet in the parking lot. We will meet in the GVR Photography Club where you will scan your GVR card confirming your eligibility to go on the trip. We’ll also review important/late-breaking information, pair up drivers and riders, provide driving directions, and give participants a chance to visit the restrooms prior to departure. Again, be sure to have your GVR card with you.

The club strives to provide several field trips specifically designed for members with physical limitations.

To participate in this event, you must be a member of the GVR Photography Club and GVR.

It’s Time for Some Night Magic:

Let’s Do the Milky Way and Other Deep Sky Objects

    Tuesday, April 21 at 2:00pm

     Desert Hills Recreation Center

Come learn about the camera settings that you will need, and what different equipment you can use, to get good pictures of the Milky Way.  With the help of Janet Parr, our presenter, anyone can get good pictures.

Janet Parr is a retired accountant.  Before retiring she and her husband decided to come up with hobbies to do.  So they chose astronomy and photography.  They have been doing both for 20 years.  Janet started doing astrophotography when she saw her first picture of the Milky Way over 15 years ago.  Since then she has been doing Milky Way photography along with deep sky objects.  She has presented at Nightfall (Borrego Springs, CA) which is an astronomical conference for almost 500 attendees.

Come join us as we learn how to get good photos of our wonderful Arizona, and other states, night skies.

    Janet Parr

    See you on April 21

Since opening their doors in 2013, the mission of the Tucson Desert Art Museum has been to educate their guests about the rich history, diverse cultures, and vibrant art of the region. At the heart of the collection lies one of the Southwest’s premier collections of Navajo and Hopi pre-1940s textiles, showcasing chiefs' blankets, Navajo saddle blankets, optical art textiles, and Yei weavings. They also house a diverse range of historical artifacts, and classic as well as contemporary Southwestern paintings, including works by renowned artists such as Maynard Dixon, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Gerald Cassidy, Ed Mell, Ray Roberts, Peter Nisbet, and Howard Post.

The museum features rotating special exhibitions that change annually, ensuring that each visit offers a new and engaging experience. From exhibits on Navajo Sand Painting to early armaments of the Southwest and artifacts from the Mesoamerican period, the collection offers a unique and eclectic array of Southwestern art and artifacts.
