Multimedia SIG  - Mondays at 10 am

Kevin May and Todd Taylor, Moderators

The Multimedia Special Interest Group meets in the Large Classroom at the GVR Photography Club in the Santa Rita Springs Social Center.

During Winter (October through April) we will meet every Monday in the Large Classroom. There will be no Zoom for these Multimedia SIG meetings, however, meetings will be recorded and placed on our YouTube channel following the meeting.

During the Summer months (May through September) we will move to an every other Monday schedule. We will also meet on the "off" weeks but without Zoom or YouTube recordings.

A typical Multimedia SIG meeting lasts about one hour and members can share videos that they have put together and get feedback and constructive suggestions on ways that they can improve their videos. The group also helps work on issues that members might have with various image and video editing software. Besides all of that, we also have a lot of fun and laughs, so please join us!

In order to participate in this event, you must be a member of the GVR Photography Club and GVR.

Thanks for registering and we are looking forward to seeing you!

    Best regards,
    GVR Photography Club

Black and White SIG - Scheduled Tuesdays @ 9:30 AM

The Black & White Special Interest Group - Wendell Werner, moderator.

Specific Tuesdays @ 9:30am during the summer (Check Schedule)

We will be meeting live in the Photography Club and by Zoom.

The Black & White Special Interest Group is a meeting of those club members who enjoy the special qualities of black & white (or more generally called “monochrome”) photography. Members bring their images for viewing and comments by the group.

Discussions on editing techniques, as well as on composition and lighting are also a part of the meeting.

The question might be asked “Why are we interested in black and white images when even the basic point and shoot digital cameras can produce very good color photographs?”  The answer is: there are some images which have more visual impact when rendered in black and white.  These images are those which use the interplay between light and shadows to emphasize texture or shapes within the composition. An example is shown above.

Typically, the photographs shown at our SIG have been produced as color images in a digital camera and converted to black and white using one or more of the popular photo editing software packages.

    November Speaker Series

    Linda Gregory and Patty Ferguson

    NOTE: Date and location change

                  Africa Tour

Welcome back to our speaker series for this coming season.  Our first program is being presented by a couple of longtime club members.

Note that due to a scheduling glitch, the event has been moved from Monday to Thursday and the location has been changed to the Anza Room for this month.

Linda Gregory has been a member of the GVR Photography Club since 2006.  Patty Ferguson has been a member since 2011.   Joining the club offers the opportunity to make special friendships, so when Linda mentioned that her dream since childhood was to travel to Africa, Patty said she'd go, too. They traveled to southeast Africa in 2016 on a nearly three-week Overseas Adventure Tour which took them to South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Not only did they see amazing wildlife, but enjoyed many cultural opportunities as well.

Come join us as we take a trip through southeast Africa.

I look forward to seeing many of you on November 18th as we start a new series of programs.

    Kim Holmes, Speaker Series Coordinator

Fox Tucson Theatre Behind the Scenes 11/26/2024

    Trip Cost:   $15.00

From its opening in 1930, Fox Tucson Theatre became the "crown jewel" of downtown Tucson's entertainment world and the most revered "Classic Movie Palace" for over 40 years until its closing in 1974. After sitting empty for 25 years and following a six-year, $14+ million rehabilitation, the theatre reopened on New Year's Eve 2006. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its unique "Southwestern Art Deco" decor as well as its world-class acoustics, the theatre also features the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ, which debuted in 2021 after a meticulous 17-year restoration.

Find more information on the Fox Tucson Theatre here.

Meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 8:30 AM for carpooling, departure at 8:45. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $6.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

We will convoy to Pueblo Parking Systems, 51 East Congress Street, where you can park either in the garage ($7) or the adjacent lot ($6). The Fox Tucson Theatre is about a block walk from the garage. There we will be met by Jordan Wiley-Hill, Outreach and Education Manager, for a private, two-hour tour of the theatre. There are no restrictions on photography equipment or what can be photographed or video'd. In fact, you are encouraged to share your photos or videos with Jordan in support of the theatre's outreach efforts.

Important Accessibility Note: There are lots of stairs involved in the tour, and unfortunately there's no elevator in this historic building. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour particularly difficult (See NOTICE below).

For lunch we will go to the Perche' No Italian Bistro around noon. The trip will end around 2:00 PM.

GVR requires that every person participating in Photography Club Field Trips must sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You may sign the waiver at the Photography Club or the morning of the trip, if you have not completed one already.

Tom Parker will be our trip leader. Contact Tom at 618-304-1456 or tparker324@aol.com with any questions. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

Last date to cancel for a refund is November 19, 2024.

If you need to canceI, please contact the Field Trip Coordinator Lynn Rozema at 719-351-5193 or email lrozema51@gmail.com. We may have people on the wait list to take your place. If you have to cancel on the day of the trip, please call Tom Parker as soon as possible.

    NOTICE:

This is a walking tour that lasts about 2 hours. All participants need to be responsible for an assessment of their mobility and health issues relating to field trips. Some trips may not be appropriate, but you must make that determination. However, the trip leader may deny participation in a specific field trip to anyone deemed not suitably prepared or able to walk with the group.

The club strives to provide several field trips specifically designed for members with physical limitations.

    Bird/Nature Photography: Tumacacori/Santa Gertrudis Lane 12/03/2024

Cost:  Free but you must register to attend

There are many excellent birding and nature photography opportunities nearby these locations.  Tumacácori National Historical Park and Santa Gertrudis Lane are excellent spots to see berry-eating birds as well as view birds bathing in the Santa Cruz River.

Be sure to bring your National Park pass for entrance to the park.  Four members per vehicle are allowed per pass, so if you carpool, ensure at least one passenger has a National Park pass.

Bird and nature expert, Sandy McMahan, a long-time teacher and trip leader, will be along on this trip. Whether you're an expert birder/photographer or a beginner, you will enjoy Sandy's narratives. If you have binoculars, you may want to bring them along. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Participants need to be comfortable walking on trails of mostly flat, uneven terrain.  A hat and water are suggested.

Bring your lunch so you can spend as much time as you want observing birds.

Meet at the Photography Club at 8:30 AM for carpooling.  If you are going to carpool with someone, the minimum donation for gas should be $3.00. We will leave promptly at 8:45 for Tumacacori/Santa Gertrudis Lane.

GVR requires that every person participating in Photography Club Field Trips must sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You may sign the waiver at the Photography Club or the morning of the trip, if you have not completed one already.

Mike McMinn will be our leader. For questions, email Mike at mikefore@comcast.net. If you must cancel on the morning of the trip, call Mike at 810-516-0220 so we won't be waiting for you.

If you need to cancel prior to the day of the trip, please contact Lynn Rozema, Field Trip Coordinator at 719-351-5193 or email at lrozema51@gmail.com as soon as possible. We may have people on the wait list to take your place.

Rancho de la Osa (includes lunch) 12/10/2024

    Cost is $20

Rancho de las Osa is an historic ranch and sportsman's paradise, situated on 590 acres and surrounded by an additional 120,000 acres of the Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge in Sasabe, AZ, near the MX border. There is a barn with horses.

A long list of historical people stayed here; John Wayne (guest room 10), Margaret Mitchell (author of Gone With the Wind), Poncho Villa, and several US presidents. On April 3,1948, President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948. It became known as the Marshall Plan, named for Secretary of State George Marshall, who in 1947 proposed that the United States provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe.  You may fall in love and want to come back to stay or maybe have a reunion at the ranch.

It is highly recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and bottled water.

    Mescal Movie Set (12/14/2024)

    Trip Cost $18

(Please note:  Due to the current filming schedule, there will be no holiday decorations.)

Grab your cowboy hat and boots and mosey on over to the world-famous Mescal Movie Set! The 1880’s cinematic town was home to the movie Tombstone, The Quick and the Dead, and over 80 other westerns. Notable actors such as Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Lee Marvin, and Clint Eastwood have walked its dusty streets.

"An 1880s Western Town, Surrounded by the High Desert Plains of Southeast Arizona and the Rincon Mountains." The film history of the Mescal area dates back over 70 years with scenes from Winchester 73 with Jimmy Stewart, The Big Country with Gregory Peck, and Cimarron with Glenn Ford. The physical set was built as a town in 1968-1969 for Monte Walsh, starring Lee Marvin and Jack Palance. This movie mirrors the current situation with the Mescal Set. An aging cowboy realizes the west he loves will soon be gone, and there is no room for cowboys like him. Released the same year was the Western comedy Dirty Dingus Magee with the legendary Frank Sinatra. Another Hollywood legend graced the set when Elizabeth Taylor filmed Poker Alice.

A succession of movies followed, including The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean starring Paul Newman, The Outlaw Josey Wales with Clint Eastwood, and Tom Horn with Steve McQueen. The 1990s had major big-budget productions. Tombstone starred Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, and many other notables such as Charlton Heston, Harry Carey Jr., and narration by Robert Mitchum. It has become a cult classic and easily the most quoted western of all time. The Quick and the Dead followed with Hollywood "A-Listers" Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, and a very young Leonardo DiCaprio.

Country music fans will recall the 1986 remake of Stagecoach starring the Highwaymen, including Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristopherson. Mescal was also used in The Gambler with Kenny Rogers.

The Mescal Set was an alternative town set for many episodes of your favorite western TV series, including Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Magnificent Seven, and Little House on the Prairie. Fans will also remember it as the town of Sweetwater in The Young Riders series.

Mescal was also a popular site for TV Movies, including The Sacketts, with Tom Selleck, Glenn Ford, and Sam Elliott, Maverick with James Garner, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, and Buffalo Soldiers with Danny Glover.

As of Valentine's Day 2021, Mescal is no longer attached to the Old Tucson Studios group as a secondary film site. The set is now on its own and building its notoriety as the world-famous Mescal Movie Set. Kartchner Ventures is thrilled to give Mescal a well-deserved facelift and is dedicated to helping bring the film industry back to Southern Arizona. Please join us in celebrating the re-opening of such a western treasure!

Contact the guide Danny Valenzuela at 602-568-5759 or dvsundevil@gmail.com with any questions.

Meet at the Photography Club at 8:15 AM for departure at 8:30AM to the Movie Set. Please do not leave on your own. If you wish to carpool, $9.00 is an appropriate amount for the driver.

GVR is requiring that every person participating in club's field trips sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography Club before the trip departs if you haven't already completed one.

Gammons Gulch Movie Set and Museum AND Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary  12/18/2024

    Trip Cost $30

First: Gammons Gulch.  We'll take a trip back in time to the days of the old west as you walk down the streets of an old west town.

Gammons Gulch, a western town and movie set, was built by Jay and Joanne Gammons. It includes a saloon, blacksmith shop, jail, assay office, church, gallows, barber shop, and much more. The buildings are not just facades; they are actual buildings with vintage furniture, dishes, lightning, tools, etc. from the territorial era.  It is truly a museum.

Gammons Gulch has served as a setting for many western movies, western-themed weddings and other events, with the surroundings and settings meeting the specifications of the actual decor of the time.

We will start with a self-guided tour of the town after which you'll be able to take photos of the interior and exterior settings at your leisure. Pictures may be taken for personal use only.

A little imagination is all you need to complete this memorable "step back in time" experience. You'll marvel at the detail and authenticity that went into the building of this movie set and museum.

Note: Due to lack of availability, western actors will not be a part of the field trip this year.

There is no food served at Gammons Gulch so bring water and a lunch.  You can eat lunch in the saloon or outside in a nice picnic area.

It is highly suggested that you wear closed-toed shoes, brimmed hats, use sunscreen, and bring bottled water.

After lunch we will take a 2–3-minute drive to the Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary. The Sanctuary has provided a loving home for donkeys since 1998. Many of these intelligent & beautiful animals have health issues because of neglect in their past. Others are in their 20s and 30s, requiring extra care and special feeds to keep them healthy.

The donkeys are roaming on 10 acres, and you can take pictures to your heart's content. If the donkeys don't want to come see you, you can walk within the Sanctuary to see them. If you have trouble walking, the Sanctuary will take you to them on a four-wheeler bike. Three of the caretakers will be available to answer any questions and tell you the donkeys' stories--if you could understand what the donkeys have to say. The tour will last about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Contact Danny Valenzuela at 602-568-5759 or dvsundevil@gmail.com with any questions.

Meet at the Photography Club at 8:15 AM for departure/carpooling at 8:30 AM to Gammons Gulch. GVR is requiring that every person participating in club's field trips sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography Club before the trip departs if you haven't already done so. We expect to leave the Donkey Sanctuary at approximately 3 pm.

If you need to cancel, please contact the Field Trip Coordinator Lynn Rozema at lrozema51@gmail.com We may have people on the wait list to take your place.

Last refund date is December 11, 2024.

Tucson Wagon and History Museum 1/14/2025

Reid Park Zoo - Behind the Scenes 2/11/2025

    Trip Cost $40.00

Get up close with some of your favorite Reid Park Zoo residents. During this 60-minute behind-the-scenes adventure, you will learn how Reid Park Zoo uses proper nutrition and health care to provide quality, whole-life care to its animal residents. Your experience includes visits to the Animal Health Center, Zoo kitchen, and rhino habitat. During a special close encounter with the rhino, you will discover the importance of animal training for completing daily health checkups. The trip cost covers both the zoo admission and the behind-the-scenes experience.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 8:00 AM for carpooling, departing at 8:15 AM. Comfortable shoes and water are suggested. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge, if available. For those carpooling, $6.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

We will drive to the Zoo, where free parking is provided for Zoo guests. We will assemble at the large Zoo sign outside the admission gate for a group photo, just in time for the Zoo’s opening at 9:00 AM. We will have about an hour before we start the behind-the-scenes experience, so you’ll have some time to get close to some of your favorite animals, check out the aviaries, and experience the Giraffe Encounter (where you can feed a giraffe for a nominal fee). Make sure you’re at the Giraffe Encounter no later than 10:20 PM so we can start the behind-the-scene experience on time. Since the behind-the-scene group size is limited to 10 people, we’ll divide the group between two Zoo educators, but don’t worry -- each group will share the same experience.

Hand-held cameras and smartphones are welcome, but Go-Pros, selfie sticks and other equipment that could potentially be stuck into animal habitats or over guardrails are not allowed. There are also areas of the Zoo where photography is not permitted: Zoo educators will advise you where photography is not allowed. The behind-the-scenes experience should end around noon.

The tour involves extensive walking and standing. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour challenging.

After your behind-the-scenes visit you’re welcome to spend the rest of the day at the Zoo, exploring on your own. You can also join us for a no-host lunch at the Bisbee Breakfast Club, 2936 East Broadway Boulevard in Tucson, where the trip will end around 1:30 PM. If you plan to go back to the Zoo following lunch, be sure to have your hand stamped at the Zoo’s entry gate.

Though outside food is not permitted in the Zoo, the Flamingo Grill located in the Zoo’s Welcome Plaza features a variety of reasonably priced menu items. You may also choose to bring your own food and picnic in one of the many areas just outside the Zoo in Reid Park – just be sure to check at the front gate before exiting if you plan on returning to the Zoo later in the day. Bottled water is always permitted in the Zoo.

Additional information about the Reid Park Zoo is available here.

    Tucson Auto MuseumTM 2/25/2025

    Trip Cost $15.00

The mission of the Tucson Auto Museum is to showcase the very old (their Model T is almost 110 years old), the iconic (hard not to fall in love with their mid-century classic Cadillacs, Desotos, and Packards), the sporty (picture yourself behind the wheel of one of their classic Corvettes, Thunderbirds, or Mustangs), the unique (ever see a car with just one door—and it is in the front?!) and more. You can even go Back to the Future in their shiny, stainless steel Deloreon. Are you a fan of Batman? Come check out the bat cave with 3 iconic vehicles from Batman Returns. Tucson Auto Museum is a venue for enthusiasts as well as those who do not yet realize that they are car people to appreciate over a century of automotive evolution and innovation.

This will be the Photography Club’s first field trip to the museum’s new and expanded location at 4825 North Sabino Canyon Road. They always have between 65 and 75 classic, iconic, and unique autos inside their 25,000+ square foot facility—plus lots of interesting automobilia like signs and gas pumps from yesteryear.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 8:15 AM for carpooling, departure at 8:30. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $9.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

Upon arrival, we will be met by museum staff who will provide a brief overview of the museum. Afterwards, you’re welcome to explore and photograph the museum’s many exhibits. We will have the museum all to ourselves. Use of tripods and flash equipment is permitted. The tour should end around noon.

Please note that this is a “living” museum -- all their cars run, are roadworthy, and are maintained at the museum, so if you are sensitive to oil, lubricants and other automotive garage scents, you might want to pass on this trip.  The tour also involves extensive walking and standing. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour challenging.

Additional information about the Tucson Auto Museum is available here

Following the tour, participants are invited to a no-host lunch at a location to be announced later. The trip should end about 1:30 PM and we should be back in Green Valley around 3:00 PM.
