We've had another month in our RV and the adventure is going well. We enjoyed the upper peninsula in Michigan, had an easy entrance into Ontario, Canada, enjoyed Niagara Falls and then came across into the US easily.
We're now in Ohio and hoping to avoid any rain from hurricane Helene. Starting in October we're going to enjoy the Smoky mountains and hopefully some nice fall color before returning home. I hope all of your adventures are going well and I look forward to seeing you on our return.

Verne Wandell
1949 - 2024
We sadly learned recently that club member, Verne Wandell, passed away last month at his home in Michigan. His family shared his obituary with us.
Verne, age 75, passed away Thursday afternoon, September 12, 2024. Verne was born in Elmira, NY, the son of Lavern and Katherine (Butts) Wandell. On February 14, 1992, he married Lorrie Gaunt who survives him.
Verne was an avid scuba diver, downhill snow skier and photographer. He enjoyed travelling. Verne worked in television production as a videographer and editor. He was an auto race official for many years with SCCA. Verne loved his chosen career.
He was kind, loving and caring, always considerate of others. Nothing was more important to him than his family. He kept in constant contact with them. He was focused on being a good man and father. He especially loved his grandchildren.
Besides his wife, Verne is survived by his children, Elizabeth (Alex) Witt and Lauren (Lou Wall) Wandell; grandchildren, Owen and Adeline; sister, Mary Boorum; nieces and nephews; and countless friends. Verne was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Michael Boorum.
We are fortunate to have known Verne and are thankful for his wonderful big game photos he shared with us. -ed

Photo of the Month
The October Photo of the Monthis byJack Sharrock, a gorgeous shot of a northern cardinal.
Jack recalls, "One of the first birds I photographed when I began bird photography was the northern cardinal. It is very colorful and it posed for me in the sweet acacia tree at our house on Paseo del Canto.
What I didn't know at the time was that the northern cardinal has a real pedigree. It is the state bird of seven states. Its range is the eastern and southern-western United States, Mexico, and several Central American countries. It does not migrate, so it's around all winter. And, it's the most popular bird on Christmas cards.
Here he is visiting my house. I use a Panasonic G-9 camera with a Leica 100-400mm lens. This photo was shot at 1/4000 second, f/6.3 and ISO 2000. The focal length was 800mm (equivalent)."
Congratulations, Jack!
The Photo of the Month is chosen from new and archived photos submitted to Sue Ready, the Club's Facebook Coordinator. Keep sending the best of your work to Sue at suready@yahoo.com so we may continue to showcase the refined capabilities of GVR Photography Club members. Photos should be submitted in .jpg format and please include its title and location. -ed
I heard strange noises last night. It could have been the sound of snowbirds returning, but It might have been the sound of innovative ideas entering my mind. I hope it was the latter.
The GVR Photography Club has faced a dilemma in recent winters. The GVR Photography Club used to offer a Big Ten Week Camera Class each winter, but attendance dropped and interest waned. A smaller version of the class was provided with similar results. The gradual decline of the activity might be attributed to photography's transition from an equipment-focused to a visually-focused approach. That change in emphasis influenced the change of name of the organization from “Camera Club” to “Photography Club.” So, as the Educational Chair, I need to find a new winter activity to fill the current needs of a photography-oriented organization.
With all that in mind, I’m sure those strange noises I heard represented an innovative idea. This winter, most likely late in January, the GVR Photography Club will host a series of workshop sessions on various photographic topics. But we need your help in selecting the most popular subjects. I've created a short survey to get your input on what topics you would be looking for in these workshops.
Please give us your recommendations by taking this short survey here.
In the meantime, as we are about to enter a new winter season in Green Valley, remember the GVR Photography Club offers a variety of Special Interest Groups and Field Trips. Visit a Special Interest Group now to expand your photographic interests.

Library News
When I turn the calendar to October I get the feeling of change. Here in southern Arizona some of the foliage in our yard is dropping leaves; the drive further south is lined with orange and yellow Cottonwood; daytime temperatures of 80s-90s will bring relief. I remember Midwest pumpkin patch visits and creating faces and costumes for Halloween parties with family and friends.
As photographers we can create fun images anytime! Our Photography Club is the mecca for creating with a camera and IPhone. Speaker Series, Showtime, and Travelogues are venues to view creative work by members and guests. Field Trips and suggested Photo Opportunities are great photo experiences. A number of members display their photos at GVR centers. Special Interest Groups (SIGS) include: Multimedia; Black and White; Studio and Fine Arts; On Assignment; Photoshop/Lightroom; Canon R Series; Photoshop Elements; and Wildlife Photography.
Each one of the events and SIGS can be enhanced by learning more — checking out a book from our Club Library inspires creativity and enhances knowledge. Some of the books in the Creativity (C) group are Creative and Experimental Photography; Learning To See Creatively; Photographic Tricks: Take Your Photography to the Next Level, and more. And, be sure to pick up a free magazine for ideas.
Photography can be “Trick AND Treat.”

Travelogue
New Travelogues Needed
I'm looking forward to a great new season of Travelogues starting next month, especially from members that haven't submitted travelogues before. We all would enjoy you sharing your travels with us. Travelogues should be less than 15 minutes, saved on a thumb drive and left in the Travelogue folder at the Club.
Let me know if you need help in getting started, what software to use or have any other questions. Please contact me at 970-596-1505 or email me here.
Paul McCreary, Travelogue Coordinator
Speaker Series
Starting in November
Hello everyone,
As our seasonal members (I was told to no longer say snowbirds) make their way back to Green Valley I hope that you will all keep Speaker Series in mind. The programs for November and January have been lined up. I am currently working on having someone from the Tucson Wagon and History museum (formerly the Tucson Rodeo Parade museum) come to present a program. Hopefully that will come together for sometime from February-April.
Drive safely getting back here.
Kim Holmes, Speaker Series Coordinator
Field Trips
Planning for Next Season
I am so excited about the upcoming field trip season! We have several new trips planned along with many old favorites, and we have some new leaders and guides along with our veterans. All in all, this season is shaping up to be a good one!
That said, we are always in need of additional leaders and guides. Most, if not all, the trips have already been accomplished in the past. So it’s just a matter of picking the date, contacting the venue, and enjoying the day. To lead a trip, just let me know where you’d like to go, and I’ll step you through the process.
Our next Field Trip Committee meeting will be on October 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at the Photography Club. Please join us to help make this the best field trip season ever!
As always, if you have any questions, ideas for future trips or want to participate in our Field Trip activities, please contact me,
Monica E. Parker, Field Trip Facilitator

Special Interest Groups are fun and educational. Any member of the Photography Club is welcome to attend any of the SIGs.
Click on any of the links listed to get more information on each one.
Monitors typically welcome and check in club members, answer the phone, and inform those seeking information about the Club. We are all indebted to the dedicated team of monitors who volunteer to keep the Photography Club open. Many thanks to all of you.
We are always looking for additional monitors. Help us provide all the benefits the Club offers to its members. As you take advantage of the Club's activities and its extensive digital processing equipment, consider sharing the effort in providing these services by volunteering as a monitor. You are not expected to know how to use the equipment. Training takes about three hours.
Must be placed by the 25th of the month prior to the month of listing.
Will run for one month, but may be resubmitted up to three times to be listed again.
