November 2025

From the President...

Things are starting to get busy. We are starting to see many familiar faces as our friends from cooler climates start coming back for the winter. It is always nice to see our fellow photographers and hear about their travels.

The board held its first meeting of the season on the 13th of October. As a reminder, the board meetings are open to all club members. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 2:30 in the large classroom. If you have questions, or issue, this is a perfect time to bring it before the board. If you don’t want to do this in person, please give your concerns or suggestions to a board member so that we can address it.

We are looking for more photos to hang for display purposes. In December we will be putting work up at the East Center and in March at Desert Hills. The more exciting news is that we have been given the opportunity to have members display their work in the Desert Hills Auditorium. The Art League will no longer be putting up their members work and GVR has given us that opportunity. We will be able to have images hanging for all of 2026. So start thinking about what you might like to have hanging around the centers.

Field Trips are really ramping up. Monica and her crew have been hard at work getting things together for this year. There will be many opportunities to get out and about for picture taking and just plain exploring.

Our presentation events start this month. By now you should have received notifications about registering for Showtime, Travelogue and Speaker Series. Please come out and support these programs. All of them will be at 2:00 pm at Desert Hills.

Jim Gardner is our new Education Chair. He is getting in the swing of things and working on putting some new classes together. Jim is also looking for members who might be interested in teaching classes. If you fit that bill, reach out to him. He’s looking for input.

El Tour de Tucson

Aid Station Volunteers Needed

Photography Club Members Can Help

El Tour de Tucson, one of the country's largest and most popular cycle races, will take place on Saturday, November 22nd. The Century (102-mile) route will take as many as 4,000 cyclists through Green Valley and Sahuarita. An Aid Station will be set up on Mission Road (across from the electrical sub-station) to provide the cyclists with food, water, a potty stop, and lots of encouragement.

We set up the Aid Station around 7:00 am, close and dismantle the Aid Station around 3:00 pm, and take care of thousands of cyclists in between. Check out this YouTube video from 2023 to learn more about what the Aid Station does to support El Tour de Tucson.

If you're interested in volunteering or have questions about the Aid Station, please contact Tom Parker at tparker324@aol.com or Joanie Rogucki at joanie.rogucki@gmail.com And don’t forget to provide your shirt size – volunteers will be provided with an El Tour de Tucson volunteer t–shirt.

Co-captains Tom Parker from the GVR Photography Club and Joanie Rogucki from the GVR Cycling Club will be hosting a meeting of Aid Station #7 volunteers at the GVR Photography Club located in the Recreation Village of Santa Rita Springs, 921 West Via Rio Fuerte in Green Valley on Thursday, November 20th at 1:00 pm.

We’re looking forward to another fun, exciting and interesting day supporting the 42nd annual El Tour de Tucson – hope you can find the time to join us!

Keep Our Facebook Page in Mind

Our new season is starting and our Field Trippers have put together a huge list of trips with great photo opportunities for you to take advantage of. We need your Field Trip photos for our Facebook page!

Be sure to send me your favorite photos so I can post them in Facebook. Those photos are also where I get to choose the Photo of the Month featured in the newsletter each month. Your photo could be chosen next!

Photo of the Month

The November Photo of the Month is by Kirk Hively, a great shot he took on a recent trip to Madera Canyon, catching a Mexican Jay.

Kirk recalls, "This photo was taken at Madera Canyon's Santa Rita Lodge on Oct 8 at 9am. We were watching from the lodge gift shop area. My wife, Sandy, her sister, Dawn, and I went to bird watch that morning.

"I took and discarded many shots as I was trying to get an action of the Mexican Jays taking off or landing from the feeding platforms. This one caught a Jay just before landing.

"I used my Canon R5, mirrorless camera. Shutter was at 1/2000 second, with continuous shooting enabled, F/5.0, ISO 2000. The 100-400 Canon lens was at 200 mm. This photo was cropped about to about 25% of the frame view."

Congratulations, Kirk!

The Photo of the Month is chosen from new and archived photos submitted to Sue Ready, the club's Facebook Coordinator. Keep sending the best of your work to Sue at suready@yahoo.com so we may continue to showcase the refined capabilities of GVR Photography Club membersPhotos should be submitted in .jpg format and please include its title and location. -ed

We are over 500 photographers who get together to learn from each other, share our experience and create photography.

Unlike our usual SIG meetings, we can actually offer individual classes on specific topics. If you’re interested in sharing your expertise please contact me. I’d be happy to help you set up a class and get everything organized.

Here’s what we’ll do:

  • Create a class description that everyone can understand.
  • Find a room that works for everyone, including the date and time.
  • Handle all the registrations so we know how many people are coming.
  • Make sure everything else is in place so you can focus on sharing your knowledge.

Don’t stop learning!

Jim Gardner, Education Chair

Library News

This November celebrates the 45th year of National American Indian Heritage Month to provide time for Native people in the United States to celebrate their culture, traditions, and music. In 1990 President George H.W. Bush signed the bill which in part said, "The President has authorized and requested to call upon Federal, State and local Governments, groups and organizations and the people of the United States to observe such month with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities."

The GVR Photography Club Library November display spotlights four books of photographer of Native American subjects Edward Sheriff Curtis’ work and a book of contemporary Native photographers. Two of the Curtis books are on loan from member Paul McCreary and are for in-library use only. The other three books may be borrowed for three weeks by Club members.

I hope that Curtis’ photographs inspire the many talented photographers in the GVR Photography Club!

Have a festive Thanksgiving!

Becky McCreary, Librarian

Saddle Up Your Story

with

Mavis Lamb

Everyone has a story to tell, but not everyone puts it on paper. Why is that? Writer’s Block! In this talk, Mavis Lamb uncovers the truth about writing your book, what’s getting in the way, and the three biggest reasons people don’t get started. She reveals the connection between perfectionism, procrastination and publishing and shares two key steps to unleash your creativity and move past those blocks. Whether you’re dreaming of a mystery novel, a how-to-manual, or a photo book, this session is for you because now is the time to Saddle Up Your Story!

Mavis Lamb, a best-selling author famously known as The Intuitive Story Wrangler, is also a ghostwriter, writer’s coach, award-winning producer, sought-after speaker, and lifelong storyteller.

She began her career producing music videos for renowned artists from Alice Cooper to Toby Keith, and has written and produced films for many clients including the National Park Service and the Grand Ole Opry. As The Intuitive Story Wrangler, she lassos her insight and expertise to help authors discover and disassemble limiting perceptions, guiding them to write and share their unique stories. Her vast experiences means she carries every facet of communication and entertainment in her saddle bag of support…and usually at least one corny joke.

She is currently completing the book, “Napping in the Lap of God,” and her mystery novel, “Killer Martini”.

Please join us on the 18th at 2:00 pm at the Desert Hills auditorium. I look forward to seeing you there.

Kim Holmes, Speaker Series Coordinator

Field Trips

This month there are quite a few things I need to address so you can be knowledgeable of all the new requirements and to remind you to follow the requirements already in place.

The new requirements are:

  • Be sure to have your GVR card with you for each and every field trip. Without it, you won't be allowed to go on the trip. No refunds will be granted for failure to comply with this requirement. To protect GVR and club member benefits, GVR has implemented a new process that requires each field trip participant to come into the club and scan his/her GVR card to confirm eligibility. We no longer have the option of typing in your name or GVR number – only the physical GVR card will do.
  • We will no longer meet in the parking lot. We will meet in the GVR Photography Club where you will scan your GVR card confirming your eligibility to go on the trip. We’ll also review important/late-breaking information, pair up drivers and riders, provide driving directions, and give participants a chance to visit the restrooms prior to departure. Again, be sure to have your GVR card with you.

Then please remember, for a problem-free field trip registration, you must adhere to the following long-standing requirements:

  • If you are a two-member household and both of you want to go on a field trip, YOU MUST REGISTER SEPARATELY USING SEPARATE EMAIL ADDRESSES. This is the only way both of you will be included in the trip. We have had members try to sign up for field trips using just the primary member's information and adding their spouse, significant other, or even a non-member, to the registration (e.g., Tom signing up as Tom and Monica Parker) and only paying once and only showing one registrant! This has significant impact if someone shows up with an additional person to an event with a strict number of people allowed (like Rancho de la Osa, Winterhaven, Taiko Drums, etc.). If this happens, you’ll need to decide on who will be going on the trip because it won’t be both of you. This is not a policy change. Even on free field trips, you must register both separately to meet the requirements GVR established for the club to remain a sanctioned GVR activity. If you are having problems registering, please let me know.
  • Please do not sign up anonymously! You do not show up on the official trip roster, so my trip leaders cannot see who you are. You will not receive information, updates, or cancellations!

In other related matters...

We decided that combining a Reid Park Zoo Behind-the-Scenes experience with ZooLights! as a single event was asking too much of our members -- it would have been an unusually long day involving a whole lot of walking. With that in mind, we have split these into two events with ZooLights! scheduled for Saturday, December 13th, and the Behind-the-Scenes event scheduled for Tuesday, December 23rd. Please be on the lookout for those revised field trips.

We were saddened to learn a blaze swept through the Ignite Sign Art Museum two weeks ago, destroying about 500 pieces of the museum's collection. Jude Cook, the museum's owner, is still assessing the damage but the museum will be closed for an extended period. We had planned on a field trip to the museum in late January 2026 but we'll have to cancel that event and instead wish Jude and Monica Cook a swift and successful recovery.

I am pleasantly surprised at the number of people who attended “How to Make Folks Smile: Become a Field Trip Leader.” I will be having another one in November for those who weren’t able to attend the one in October.

Give a big round of thanks to Denise LeCount-O'Brien, Danny Valenzuela, Patty Ferguson, and Tom Parker for stepping up and leading all the trips that are currently on the books or have already occurred.  We have additional leaders and trips in the works for 2026. We are going places we've never been before or haven't been to in quite a while, so it's shaping up to be a banner year!  In can't be over-emphasized, our trip leaders are the ones who make our field trips a success!

And finally, we are renaming the title Field Trip Facilitator to the Field Trip Chair in line with the Education Chair.  The Field Trip Coordinator, Lynn Rozema, and our backup (Sarah Sheehan) will be Co-Chairs. We will be the only ones able to post trips, run the registration and waitlist, cancel registrations, and request reimbursement to the member from the Club's Treasurer. This does not change any procedure that is already in place, it’s strictly a title change.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support!

Monica Parker, Field Trip Chair

Photo Opportunities

There’s a variety of special events in November, including Dia de los Muertos celebrations in Tubac and Tucson, the Empire Ranch Cowboy Festival, the Tucson Greek Fest and the Safford Air Show. You can chow down on some chili and check out the classic cars and motorcycles on display in Amado, meet the artists in Tubac, check out the canines at an all-breeds dog show or take in the balloon glow in Sahuarita. And if the grandkids are in town, treat them to Lego® building block displays at the Brick Convention.

But if it’s action photos you’re looking for, don’t go anywhere! The 42nd El Tour de Tucson on November 22 will feature nearly 3,000 cyclists taking on a challenging 102-mile course through Sahuarita and Green Valley before heading back to Tucson. Expect plenty of activity (and traffic disruptions) between 9:00 am and 2:30 pm. Bring a lawn chair and a cool beverage along with your trusty digital device and find a good spot to catch the action along the route. You can find more complete information on the tour here.

And finally, although services and hours may be limited due to the current government shutdown. remember that you can take advantage of free entrance to the National Parks on November 11 in honor of Veterans Day,

All great reasons to get out and get some great shots.
