Birding/Nature: Aqua Nueva/Sweetwater Wetlands/Audubon Store 10/22/2024

Cost:  FREE

Aqua Nueva a new park created at the old wastewater treatment plant just north of Sweetwater Wetlands and destined to be another top-notch birding spot. Sweetwater Wetlands is one of the top birding areas in the Tucson metro area. This water-rich streamside riparian zone supports a huge variety of wildlife, including dragonflies, raccoons, hawks, bobcats and dozens of other species that make the wetlands their full- or part-time home.  Recent sightings include an Orange-crowned Warbler, a Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, a Cassin's Kingbird and a Spotted Sandpiper, just to name a few.  The various types of waterfowl are always a treat!

Paths are flat and either decomposed granite or gravel. The first of two scheduled burns has been completed allowing you the opportunity to observe birds and activities that weren't visible when the reeds were very high.

If you have binoculars, you may want to bring them along. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. A hat and water are suggested.  Bring your lunch as we will be dining on the back patio of the Tucson Audobon Store.

Meet at the Photography Club at 8 AM for carpooling.  If you carpool, a minimum tip to the driver should be $4.00 per person (mileage X .1 = Gas reimbursement).

We will meet at the Photography Club parking lot at 7:30 for an 7:45 departure.  Mike McMinn will lead the group, with our birding and nature guide, Sandy McMahan.

GVR requires that every person participating in Photography Club Field Trips must sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You may sign the waiver at the Photography Club or the morning of the trip, if you have not completed one already.

Mike McMinn will be our leader. If you must cancel the morning of the trip, please call or text Mike so we won't be waiting for you.  If you have any questions about this trip, call Mike at 810-516-0220 or email at mikefore@comcast.net.

If you need to cancel please contact Lynn Rozema, Field Trip Coordinator at lrozema51@gmail.com. We may have people on the wait list to take your place.
