Birding/Nature: Rio Rico/Guy Tobin Trail --

Tuesday 02/18/2025

Cost:  Free but you must register to attend

The Guy Tobin Trail is a beautiful trail that runs along the Santa Cruz River. Water runs year-round and you can hike along the river under a canopy of beautiful cottonwood trees!

The Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail starts here. Anza began recruiting settlers and soldiers in the Spring of 1775. They assembled in San Miguel de Horcasitas (now in Mexico) and departed on September 29, 1775, heading north. The final assembly was at Tubac Presidio, where they left Spanish civilization behind and traveled 890 miles to Monterey, California.

Tobin was instrumental in working with the Anza Trail Coalition of Arizona and the National Park Service to establish the 13-mile segment of the Anza National Historic Trail from Rio Rico to Tubac. It received official certification from the National Park Service in November of 2005.

In 1774, Juan Bautista de Anza was helped by American Indian guides to discover a 1,200-mile land route from Nogales, Mexico to Monterey, California. In 1775, Juan brought about 240 people across the new frontier of New Spain from Mexico to California. With military escort and 1000 head of livestock, the journey took 5.5 months for the settlers to complete.

This is more of a "sit and watch the birds", so be sure to bring a comfortable chair. Please note:  There are stairs leading from the parking lot down to the trail level. If you have binoculars, you may want to bring them along. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. A hat and water are suggested.  Lunch will be a Nickels in Rio Rico or you may bring your lunch if you wish.

Meet at the upper-level parking lot at the Photography Club at 8:30 AM for carpooling.  We will leave for Rio Rico/Guy Tobin Trail at 8:45AM.  $5.00 is an appropriate amount to give your driver if you rideshare.

Monica Parker will be our trip leader. Contact Monica at 618-304-1164 or mparker582@aol.com with any questions. She will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

GVR is requiring that every person participating in club's field trips must sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You will be required to sign a waiver prior to departing. GVR is requiring that we provide them with the signed waivers as well as a list of field trip attendees.

If you need to cancel, please contact Field Trip Coordinator Lynn Rozema at (719) 351-5193 or lrozema51@gmail.com
