St Anthony's Greek Monastery
A beautiful study of architecture, having gardens and 6 different church structures. All this was completed by the monks since starting in 1995. The monastery is dedicated to St Anthony the Great, the father of Monasticism and the renowned 3rd century anchorite. It is located in Florence AZ. There is no charge to visit the monastery.
You are welcome to go inside the chapels and take photographs, but NOT of the monks or the people that are visiting and spending time there.
There is a dress code: Men--long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Women--long skirts, long-sleeved blouses, and scarves to cover the head. (No skirts with slits, tight fitting clothes, hats, low cut or sheer blouses or small scarves.) They can loan you some clothing, if you do not come properly dressed.
Since it is a holy place, they ask that you respect this, so do not go into the monk's living quarters, guest houses or the dinning room. Put cell phones on mute and smoking is not allowed on the grounds. Obey the signs that say--do not go beyond this area.
Bathrooms are located on the backside of the bookstore.
We will leave the monastery about 1:15 to drive into Florence for lunch at Mt Athos, a Greek restaurant, where we have reservations at 1:30. Lunch is at your own expense.
Meet at the Camera Club at 7:45 AM, and depart at 8:00 AM (100 mile drive ahead of us) and return in the late afternoon.
Carl Sparfeld will be our leader. Contact him at 215-872-1325 or csparfeld@cox.net. If for any reason you cannot attend, after signing up, please let Carl know.
