Come explore “The Darndest Place You’ll Ever Visit.”  Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch is a three-generation family owned and operated working ostrich ranch, and these days there’s much more than just ostriches on the ranch. They have a wide variety of animals in fun settings so everyone can enjoy a hands-on experience. Joining the ostrich are Miniature Sicilian Donkeys, Nigerian Dwarf Goats, Fallow Deer, Peking Ducks, “The Goat Penthouse” and the “Hole in the Wall Gang” featuring Boer Goats, and the all-time favorite Rainbow Lorikeets. The field trip cost covers admission to the ranch and one “helping” of food for all the animals, including lorikeet nectar and stingray food. There’ll be plenty of time to feed and photograph the ostriches and other critters.

We’ll climb aboard the Monster Truck for a fun and informative 50-minute tour through the ostrich ranch where you’ll be surrounded by hundreds of ostrich. Learn all about ostrich farming, the desert and wildlife, and rattlesnake safety. Then it is time to go Ostrich Fishin’ – everybody’s favorite way to fish.

    Android Phone Photography

    Instructor: Gene Komaromi

    Location: Large Classroom

    Date/Time: Tues Jan 20 @ 10am

We all carry smartphones with us, and most modern Android phones boast powerful cameras capable of shooting beautiful photos. However, no camera can take great photos alone, and the photographer needs to know what they're doing to a certain extent to get the best results from the incredible technology. Many smartphone owners are amateurs when it comes to photography and just point and shoot subjects without really thinking about what they're doing, and this can lead to disappointing results. However, thankfully, there are plenty of techniques all Android users can learn to improve the photos they take with their mobile device.

Join Gene in our “Android Phones As A Camera” class, and you’ll learn tips on using your Android phone like a DSLR. You will learn about the best camera applications and settings, and how to compose your shots for maximum impact.

We look forward to seeing you!

This month’s Speaker Series will  shine a spotlight on the experiences of Danny Valenzuela, the former President of the Photography Club.  Danny will be taking us on two different journeys that he undertook last year.

The Bisbee 1000 Great Stair Climb.  Travel with Danny and his brother as they traverse the route of the Bisbee 1000 Great Stair Climb.  Experience this route at a slower pace than those that do the race.

Journey Along the Camino Portugal.  Follow Danny on this trek along the Central Route of the Camino Portugal.  The pathway extends from Porto, Portugal, to the famed Camino de Santiago in Spain.

We invite you to join us as Danny shares his personal experiences, offering valuable insights into his creative journey. You will have the opportunity to hear firsthand the lessons he learned and the challenges he overcame in photography and videography.

    Danny

    See you on January 20

Prior to arriving at Rancho de La Osa, we will venture to the Sasabe Border Port of Entry. The U. S. Customs and Border Protection Supervisor will provide some information about the port of entry and the border wall. There are great photo opportunities for photos of the wall.

From there we stop at the Sasabe General Store for refreshments. Deborah, the fourth-generation owner, will open the unique Hill-Top Bar, located at the rear of the store. It is a uniquely designed bar with great photo opportunities.

Then we will proceed to Rancho de las Osa, an historic ranch and sportsman's paradise, situated on 590 acres and surrounded by an additional 120,000 acres of the Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge in Sasabe, AZ. It is really a true and historic place made up of luxurious adobe guest rooms, Mexican antiques and vintage furniture and a perfect location for horseback riding, wildlife photography and more.

A long list of historical people stayed here; John Wayne (guest room 10), Margaret Mitchell (author of Gone with the Wind), Poncho Villa, and several US presidents. On April 3,1948, President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948. It became known as the Marshall Plan, named for Secretary of State George Marshall, who in 1947 proposed that the United States provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe.  You may fall in love and want to come back to stay or maybe have a reunion at the ranch.

It is highly recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and bottled water.

Lunch will be a buffet of assorted items. Please inform the Danny no later than January 17th if there are dietary restrictions. A cash bar is available prior to lunch.

    Mescal Movie Set--Saturday 1/24/2026

Trip Cost $22 (Please note important information below)

The trip leader will be sending out additional information and questions regarding this trip.  Please add your trip leader's contact information for both the email and phone number into your contact lists so you don't miss out on any important information.

Grab your cowboy hat and boots and mosey on over to the world-famous Mescal Movie Set! The 1880’s cinematic town was home to the movie Tombstone, The Quick and the Dead, and over 80 other westerns. Notable actors such as Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Lee Marvin, and Clint Eastwood have walked its dusty streets.

"An 1880s Western Town, Surrounded by the High Desert Plains of Southeast Arizona and the Rincon Mountains." The film history of the Mescal area dates back over 70 years with scenes from Winchester 73 with Jimmy Stewart, The Big Country with Gregory Peck, and Cimarron with Glenn Ford. The physical set was built as a town in 1968-1969 for Monte Walsh, starring Lee Marvin and Jack Palance. This movie mirrors the current situation with the Mescal Set. An aging cowboy realizes the west he loves will soon be gone, and there is no room for cowboys like him. Released the same year was the Western comedy Dirty Dingus Magee with the legendary Frank Sinatra. Another Hollywood legend graced the set when Elizabeth Taylor filmed Poker Alice.

A succession of movies followed, including The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean starring Paul Newman, The Outlaw Josey Wales with Clint Eastwood, and Tom Horn with Steve McQueen. The 1990s had major big-budget productions. Tombstone starred Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, and many other notables such as Charlton Heston, Harry Carey Jr., and narration by Robert Mitchum. It has become a cult classic and easily the most quoted western of all time. The Quick and the Dead followed with Hollywood "A-Listers" Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, and a very young Leonardo DiCaprio.

Country music fans will recall the 1986 remake of Stagecoach starring the Highwaymen, including Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristopherson. Mescal was also used in The Gambler with Kenny Rogers.

The Mescal Set was an alternative town set for many episodes of your favorite western TV series, including Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Magnificent Seven, and Little House on the Prairie. Fans will also remember it as the town of Sweetwater in The Young Riders series.

Mescal was also a popular site for TV Movies, including The Sacketts, with Tom Selleck, Glenn Ford, and Sam Elliott, Maverick with James Garner, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, and Buffalo Soldiers with Danny Glover.

As of Valentine's Day 2021, Mescal is no longer attached to the Old Tucson Studios group as a secondary film site. The set is now on its own and building its notoriety as the world-famous Mescal Movie Set. Kartchner Ventures is thrilled to give Mescal a well-deserved facelift and is dedicated to helping bring the film industry back to Southern Arizona. Please join us in celebrating such a western treasure!

Contact the guide Danny Valenzuela at 602-568-5759 or dvsundevil@gmail.com with any questions.

We will meet in the GVR Photography Club at 9:00 AM for departure at 9:15 AM to the Movie Set. Please do not leave on your own. If you wish to carpool, $15.00 is an appropriate amount for the driver.  Lunch afterwards will be at the Mescal Bar & Grill.

GVR is requiring that every person participating in club's field trips sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography Club before the trip departs if you haven't already completed one.

Odaiko Sonora is Tucson's taiko, or Japanese ensemble drumming group. Serving southern AZ since May 2002, Odaiko Sonora is dedicated to increasing familiarity with and understanding of taiko in our community. They do this each year through classes and master workshops, performances, school residencies, team building workshops and by producing concerts that include internationally acclaimed taiko artists. Learn more about Odaiko Sonora here

Taiko is most beautiful when players are performing in unison, with musicality and proper technique, striving for accuracy and focus. With over 60 appearances — for over 150,000 people each year — these players are committed to taiko as a performing art form. Performances vary from outdoor festivals to private parties to staged theatrical productions. Dedication, rigorous training, creative contribution, flexibility and a great attitude define these players. As with most things, practice makes perfect!

We’ll have a rare opportunity to observe, photograph and video one of Odaiko Sonora’s Community Group practice sessions. Their Community Group is for players who wish to work together as a group to increase skill levels, expand their repertoire, and work towards community performances 3–5 times a year. Check out this YouTube video to get an idea of the treat that’s in store for you.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club at 7:00 AM for carpooling, departure at 7:30 AM. Please do not wear perfumes, scented lotions or glitter since the studio is a glitter- and scent-free space. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

We’ll drive to the RiP Factory located at 1013 South Tyndall Avenue in Tucson for the 8:30 AM practice session. To avoid distracting the performers, flash photography is not allowed. Tripods are fine provided they can be moved to ensure performers can access personal items/water bottles during breaks. The session should end at 10:30 AM, followed by a Q&A session where you’re invited to ask about the instruments and the taiko art form.

Following the practice session, participants are invited to an optional no-host lunch – a teppanyaki (hibachi) dining experience involving a different kind of performance -- at Hana Tokyo, 5435 South Calle Santa Cruz, Suite #185 in Tucson (in the Tucson Spectrum Shopping Mall next to Harkins Theatres). Find more information about Hana Tokyo here.

Tom Parker will be the trip leader. For questions call Tom at 618 304-1456 or email at tparker324@aol.com. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

    NOTE -- IMPORTANT CHANGES:

Be sure to have your GVR card with you for each and every field trip. Without it, you won't be allowed to go on the trip. No refunds will be granted for failure to comply with this requirement.  To protect GVR and club member benefits, GVR has implemented a new process that requires each field trip participant to come into the club and scan his/her GVR card to confirm eligibility. At the Titan Missile Museum, visitors journey through time to stand on the front line of the Cold War. This preserved Titan II missile site is all that remains of the 54 Titan II missile sites that were on alert across the United States from 1963 to 1987. The Titan II was capable of launching from its underground silo in 58 seconds and could deliver a nine-megaton thermonuclear warhead to its target more than 6,000 miles away in less than thirty minutes.

This one-of-a kind museum gives visitors a rare look at the technology used by the United States to deter nuclear war. What was once one of America’s most top-secret places is now a National Historic Landmark, fulfilling its new mission of bringing Cold War history to life for millions of visitors from around the world. Learn more about the museum
    here.

On our 45-minute guided tour, you’ll descend 35 feet into the missile complex, visit the launch control center, and experience a simulated launch of the missile. Then you’ll journey down the cableway to level 2 of the missile silo to get an up-close look at the Titan II missile itself. Note: This portion of the field trip involves extensive standing and walking, including descending and ascending 55 stair steps. There is no elevator access. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour challenging. You can still enjoy the surface portion of the missile site.

On the surface, visitors will see the alarm systems that secured the missile silo door, an up-close view of the missile’s engine, and tour a variety of vehicles relevant to silo and site as well as other Air Force operations. The silo doors are open enough to look down into the 146-foot missile silo and see the Titan II Missile standing tall as it did on Alert for over 20 years. Be sure to check out the Education and Research Center and the museum’s gift shop. We’ll have about an hour to explore the grounds and topside museum.

Non-commercial photography and video recording are permitted, although flash photography, selfie sticks and tripods are prohibited.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club at 9:15 AM for carpooling, departure at 9:45 AM. Please wear comfortable shoes and your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $2.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

Following the tour, participants are invited to a no-host lunch at El Patio Mexican Restaurant, located at 100 West Duval Mine Road in Sahuarita, AZ, where the trip will end about 1:30 PM.

The tour involves extensive walking, stairs, and standing. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour challenging.

Tom Parker will be our trip leader. Contact Tom at 618-304-1456 or tparker324@aol.com with any questions. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

GVR requires that every person participating in club's field trips must sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography club before the trip departs if you haven't already done so.

Last date to cancel for a refund is February 11, 2026.

If you need to cancel, please contact the Field Trip Co-Chair Lynn Rozema at 719-351-5193 or email lrozema51@gmail.com.  We may have people on the wait list to take your place.  On the morning of the trip, please call Tom and Lynn as soon as you know you cannot make the trip.

    Reid Park Zoo Behind-the-Scenes - Friday 02/20/2026

    Trip Cost $40.00

Get up close with some of your favorite Reid Park Zoo residents. During this 60-minute behind-the-scenes adventure, you will learn how Reid Park Zoo uses proper nutrition and health care to provide quality, whole-life care for its animal residents. Your experience includes visits to the Animal Health Center, Zoo kitchen, and rhino habitat. During a special close encounter with the rhino, you will discover the importance of animal training for completing daily health checkups. The trip cost covers both the zoo admission and the behind-the-scenes experience.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club at 7:45 AM for carpooling, departing at 8:15 AM. Comfortable shoes and water are suggested. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge, if available. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

We'll drive to the Zoo, where free parking is provided for Zoo guests. We'll assemble at the large Zoo sign outside the admission gate for a group photo, just in time for the Zoo’s opening at 9:00 AM. We will have about an hour before we start the behind-the-scenes experience, so you’ll have some time to get close to some of your favorite animals, check out the aviaries, and experience the Giraffe Encounter (where you can feed a giraffe for a nominal fee). Make sure you’re at the Giraffe Encounter no later than 10:20 AM so we can start the behind-the-scenes experience on time. Since the behind-the-scenes group size is limited to 10 people, we’ll divide the group between two Zoo educators, but don’t worry -- each group will share the same experience.

Hand-held cameras and smartphones are welcome, but Go-Pros, selfie sticks and other equipment that could potentially be stuck into animal habitats or over guardrails are not allowed. There are also areas of the Zoo where photography is not permitted: Zoo educators will advise you where photography is not allowed. The behind-the-scenes experience should end around noon.

The tour involves extensive walking and standing. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour challenging.

After your behind-the-scenes visit you’re welcome to spend the rest of the day at the Zoo, exploring on your own. You can also join us for a no-host lunch at the Hungry Fox Restaurant & Country Store located at 4637 East Broadway Boulevard in Tucson, where the trip will end around 2:00 PM. If you plan to go back to the Zoo following lunch, be sure to have your hand stamped at the Zoo’s entry gate.

Though outside food is not permitted in the Zoo, the Flamingo Grill located in the Zoo’s Welcome Plaza features a variety of reasonably priced menu items. You may also choose to bring your own food and picnic in one of the many areas just outside the Zoo in Reid Park – just be sure to check at the front gate before exiting if you plan on returning to the Zoo later in the day. Bottled water is always permitted in the Zoo.

Additional information about the Reid Park Zoo is available here.

All participants need to be responsible for an assessment of their mobility and health issues relating to field trips. Some trips may not be appropriate, but you must make that determination. However, the trip leader may deny participation in a specific field trip to anyone deemed not suitably prepared or able to walk with the group.

The club strives to provide several field trips specifically designed for members with physical limitations.
