Fox Tucson Theatre Behind the Scenes -- Wednesday 3/18/2026

    Trip Cost:   $18.00

From its opening in 1930, the Fox Tucson Theatre became the "crown jewel" of downtown Tucson's entertainment world and the most revered "Classic Movie Palace" for over 40 years until its closing in 1974. After sitting empty for 25 years and following a six-year, $14+ million rehabilitation, the theatre reopened on New Year's Eve 2006. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its unique "Southwestern Art Deco" decor as well as its world-class acoustics, the theatre also features the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ, which debuted in 2021 after a meticulous 17-year restoration.

Find more information on the Fox Tucson Theatre here.

We'll meet in the Photography Club at 8:15 AM for carpooling, departure at 8:45. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

We will convoy to Pueblo Parking Systems, 51 East Congress Street, where you can park either in the garage ($7) or the adjacent lot ($6). The Fox Tucson Theatre is about a block walk from the garage. There we will be met by Jordan Wiley-Hill, Outreach and Education Manager, for a private, 2 1/2-hour tour of the theatre. There are no restrictions on photography equipment or what can be photographed or video'd. In fact, you are encouraged to share your photos or videos with Jordan in support of the theatre's outreach efforts.

Important Accessibility Note: There are lots of stairs involved in the tour, and unfortunately there's no elevator in this historic building. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour particularly difficult.

For lunch we will go to the Perche' No Italian Bistro around noon. The trip will end around 2:00 PM.

GVR requires that every person participating in Photography Club Field Trips must sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You may sign the waiver at the Photography Club or the morning of the trip, if you have not completed one already.

Tom Parker will be our trip leader. Contact Tom at 618-304-1456 or tparker324@aol.com with any questions. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

Last date to cancel for a refund is March 11, 2026.

If you need to canceI, please contact the Field Trip Coordinator Lynn Rozema at 719-351-5193 or email lrozema51@gmail.com as soon as you know you cannot attend. We may have people on the wait list to take your place. If you have to cancel on the day of the trip, please call Tom Parker as soon as possible.

NOTE: For those interested in seeing the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ in action, the Fox Tucson Theatre is hosting the Red White and Blue American Music Tribute and Harold Llyod's Safety Last silent film on February 17, 2026 at 7:00 pm.

    NOTICE:

This is a walking tour that lasts about 2 hours. All participants need to be responsible for an assessment of their mobility and health issues relating to field trips. Some trips may not be appropriate, but you must make that determination. Gammons Gulch Movie Set and Museum AND Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary -- Tuesday  3/31/2026

    Trip Cost $30

    IMPORTANT CHANGES:

Gammons Gulch.  We'll take a trip back in time to the days of the old west as you walk down the streets of an old west town.

Gammons Gulch, a western town and movie set, was built by Jay and Joanne Gammons. It includes a saloon, blacksmith shop, jail, assay office, church, gallows, barber shop, and much more. The buildings are not just facades; they are actual buildings with vintage furniture, dishes, lightning, tools, etc. from the territorial era.  It is truly a museum.

Gammons Gulch has served as a setting for many western movies, western-themed weddings and other events, with the surroundings and settings meeting the specifications of the actual decor of the time.

We will start with a self-guided tour of the town after which you'll be able to take photos of the interior and exterior settings at your leisure. Pictures may be taken for personal use only.

A little imagination is all you need to complete this memorable "step back in time" experience. You'll marvel at the detail and authenticity that went into the building of this movie set and museum.

Note: Due to lack of availability, western actors will not be a part of the field trip this year.

There is no food served at Gammons Gulch so bring water and a lunch.  You can eat lunch in the saloon or outside in a nice picnic area.

It is highly suggested that you wear closed-toed shoes, brimmed hats, use sunscreen, and bring bottled water.

Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary.  After lunch we will take a 2–3-minute drive to Forever Home. The Sanctuary has provided a loving home for donkeys since 1998. Many of these intelligent & beautiful animals have health issues because of neglect in their past. Others are in their 20s and 30s, requiring extra care and special feeds to keep them healthy.

The donkeys are roaming on 10 acres, and you can take pictures to your heart's content. If the donkeys don't want to come see you, you can walk within the Sanctuary to see them. If you have trouble walking, the Sanctuary will take you to them on a four-wheeler bike. Caretakers will be available to answer any questions and tell you the donkeys' stories--if you could understand what the donkeys have to say. The tour will last about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Contact Danny Valenzuela at 602-568-5759 or dvsundevil@gmail.com with any questions.

Meet at the Photography Club at 8:15 AM for departure/carpooling at 8:30 AM to Gammons Gulch. GVR is requiring that every person participating in club's field trips sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography Club before the trip departs if you haven't already done so. We expect to leave the Donkey Sanctuary at approximately 3 pm.

If you need to cancel, please contact the Field Trip Co-Chair Lynn Rozema at lrozema51@gmail.com We may have people on the wait list to take your place.

Last refund date is March 24, 2026.

We will no longer meet in the parking lot. We will meet in the GVR Photography Club where you will scan your GVR card confirming your eligibility to go on the trip. We’ll also review important/late-breaking information, pair up drivers and riders, provide driving directions, and give participants a chance to visit the restrooms prior to departure. Again, be sure to have your GVR card with you.

The club strives to provide several field trips specifically designed for members with physical limitations.

To participate in this event, you must be a member of the GVR Photography Club and GVR.

Tucson Desert Art Museum - Wednesday 04/22/2026

    Trip Cost: $15

Important Note: Deadline to register is April 14, 2026.

Since opening their doors in 2013, the mission of the Tucson Desert Art Museum has been to educate their guests about the rich history, diverse cultures, and vibrant art of the region. At the heart of the collection lies one of the Southwest’s premier collections of Navajo and Hopi pre-1940s textiles, showcasing chiefs' blankets, Navajo saddle blankets, optical art textiles, and Yei weavings. They also house a diverse range of historical artifacts, and classic as well as contemporary Southwestern paintings, including works by renowned artists such as Maynard Dixon, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Gerald Cassidy, Ed Mell, Ray Roberts, Peter Nisbet, and Howard Post.

The museum features rotating special exhibitions that change annually, ensuring that each visit offers a new and engaging experience. From exhibits on Navajo Sand Painting to early armaments of the Southwest and artifacts from the Mesoamerican period, the collection offers a unique and eclectic array of Southwestern art and artifacts.

Learn more about the Tucson Desert Art Museum here.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club at 8:30 AM for departure at 9:00 AM. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or GVR Camera Club nametag if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

At the museum, a docent will guide us through the highlights of the museum’s extensive collection and bring the various displays to life. The docent-led tour should last 45 minutes, after which you’ll have about an hour to explore the museum on your own. Use of tripods and monopods is allowed.

Following the museum visit, participants are invited to an optional, no-host lunch at the Canyon's Crown Restaurant and Pub located at 6958 East Tanque Verde Road in Tucson. The trip will conclude around 1:30 PM and we should be back in Green Valley around 3:00 PM.

Sarah Sheehan and Sue Ready will be our trip leaders. Contact Sue at 612-240-2818 or suready@yahoo.com with any questions. She will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

GVR requires that every person participating in Photography Club Field Trips must sign a waiver prior to departure absolving GVR of any liability. You may sign the waiver any time at the Club or the morning of the field trip.

If you need to cancel, please contact the Field Trip Co-Chair Lynn Rozema at 719-351-5193 or email lrozema51@gmail.com.  We may have people on the wait list to take your place.  On the morning of the trip, please call Sue and Lynn as soon as you know you cannot make the trip.

Last day to cancel for a refund is April 15, 2026.
