    Black & White SIG - Tuesdays @ 9:30 am

    Moderator: Wendell Werner

    Location: Ansel Adams Room

    Date/Time: Tuesdays at 9:30 am

From November 2025 to April 2026, we will be meeting every week. There will be NO SCHEDULED ZOOM meetings for these sessions, so come on out to the Club and join us!

The Black & White Special Interest Group is a meeting of those club members who enjoy the special qualities of black & white (or more generally called “monochrome”) photography. Members bring their images for viewing and comments by the group.

Discussions on editing techniques, as well as on composition and lighting are also a part of the meeting.

The question might be asked “Why are we interested in black and white images when even the basic point and shoot digital cameras can produce very good color photographs?”  The answer is: there are some images which have more visual impact when rendered in black and white. These images are those which use the interplay between light and shadows to emphasize texture or shapes within the composition. An example is shown above.

Typically, the photographs shown at our SIG have been produced as color images in a digital camera and converted to black and white using one or more of the popular photo editing software packages.

Madera Canyon Milky Way Photography –

    Thursday 10/16/2025

Trip Cost: Free but you must register to attend.

October is a great time to photograph the Milky Way in Arizona.  The sun sets around 6 PM and the weather is generally warm.  You can start taking photos about 2 hours after sunset, so there are multiple opportunities starting at 8 PM and you don’t need to be out late into the night.  On the 16th of October, the moon is 15% illuminated but does not rise until 3 AM on the following morning.  In these conditions, skies are very dark in Madera Canyon and the Milky Way will pop!

This is an outdoor event.  Please dress appropriately and wear comfortable shoes.  You will need a camera with manual settings and a sturdy tripod.  A wide-angle lens with large aperture (at least 4.0) is helpful. Our field trip leader Cliff DeJong will send out suggested settings and other tips by email a few days before this event.  You can try and use a cell phone but results will not be very good.

We will meet and photograph in the Proctor parking lot at the entrance to Madera Canyon.  Be there by 7:30 PM to get setup.  You may want to come a little earlier to get the foreground lit up at dusk, but please do not come after 8 PM, since your headlights will disrupt photos.

Cliff DeJong will be the trip leader.  For questions, call Cliff at 720-340-9194 or email at CliffDeJong@gmail.com. He will send out more information to registered participants via email a few days before the event.  There will also be a session at the club to show editing tips.

Because of space limitations at the parking lot, there is a limit of 12 photographers.  If there is enough interest, there may be another session on October 20.  Please register no later than October 12.

GVR requires that every person participating in the club’s field trips must sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign waiver at the Photography Club before the trip.

If you need to cancel, please contact the field Trip Co-chair Lynn Rozema at 719-351-5193 or email lrozema51@gmail.com. We may have people on the waitlist to take your place.  On the morning of the trip, please call Cliff and Lynn as soon as you know you cannot make the trip.

Tombstone - The "Town Too Tough to Die" -- Saturday 10/18/2025

    Cost is $18

Tombstone was founded in 1877 by a prospector named Ed Schieffelin. Ed stayed at Camp Huachuca (wa-chu-ka) as part of a scouting expedition against the Chiricahua (chir-i-cow-uh) Apache. During his time there he would venture out into the wilderness “looking for rocks”, all the while ignoring the warning about the native Apache. Soldiers at the camp would tell him, “Ed, the only stone you will find out there will be your tombstone”. He did find his stone near Goose Flats and it was Silver. Remembering the warnings from the soldiers at Camp Huachuca and using his sly sense of humor he named his first mine The Tombstone.

Before long word spread about the Arizona silver strike and soon prospectors, cowboys, homesteaders, lawyers, speculators flocked to the area in droves. In 1879 a town site was laid out on the nearest level spot to the mines, known at the time as Goose Flats (also spelled Glats), and was appropriately named “Tombstone” after Ed Schieffelin's first mining claim.

THIS FIELD TRIP WILL TAKE PLACE DURING HELLDORADO DAYS. Helldorado Days consist of gunfight re-enactment shows, street entertainment, fashion shows and other entertainment, bouncy castles, and food vendors. You will step back in time and immerse yourself in the rugged charm of Tombstone, where the old west comes to life. Walk the same streets once walked by Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and other legendary figures from the Wild West.

Other than Boot Hill Graveyard, all the activities are located in a 4-block area of Tombstone, so bring comfortable walking shoes.

Our first stop will be at Boot Hill Graveyard to visit more than 250 graves. Buried are outlaws with their victims, suicides, and hangings, legal and otherwise, along with hardy citizens and refined element of Tombstone’s first days.

At 11:00am we will visit the OK Corral. There you will witness the reenactment of the “Gunfight at the OK Corral”. After the gunfight we will view a video about the history of Tombstone narrated by Actor Vincent Price, as he tells Tombstone's story from Geronimo's Apaches to modern times.

Entrance to the Boot Hill Graveyard and the OK Corral Gunfight and Tombstone Historama are included in the field trip fee.

After the Tombstone Historama you are free to walk the streets of Tombstone where you can indulge in unique shopping, delicious dining and other shows and tours on your own.

Some interesting exhibits to view on your own as time allows.  Prices my change before our arrival date.

Birdcage Theatre Self-Guided Tour ($16.50) Approx 30 min

    Wyatts Saloon Theatre -$10

Wyatt Earps Oriental Saloon & Theater - $10

    Stagecoach Rides--$15

Gunfighter Hall of Fame – Free if open

    Tombstone Trolly Tour (20 min) - $15

Tombstone’s Western Town Comedy Gunfight $

You are free to stay as long as you wish to enjoy the many experiences of Tombstone.

Meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 7:15 AM for carpooling, departure at 7:30. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $20.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

GVR requires that every person participating in club's field trips sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography Club before the trip departs if you haven’t signed one.

Danny Valenzuela will be our trip leader.  Contact Danny at 602-568-5759 or email at dvsundevil@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Gammons Gulch Movie Set and Museum AND Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary -- Friday   10/31/2025

    Trip Cost $30

First: Gammons Gulch.  We'll take a trip back in time to the days of the old west as you walk down the streets of an old west town.

Gammons Gulch, a western town and movie set, was built by Jay and Joanne Gammons. It includes a saloon, blacksmith shop, jail, assay office, church, gallows, barber shop, and much more. The buildings are not just facades; they are actual buildings with vintage furniture, dishes, lightning, tools, etc. from the territorial era.  It is truly a museum.

Gammons Gulch has served as a setting for many western movies, western-themed weddings and other events, with the surroundings and settings meeting the specifications of the actual decor of the time.

We will start with a self-guided tour of the town after which you'll be able to take photos of the interior and exterior settings at your leisure. Pictures may be taken for personal use only.

A little imagination is all you need to complete this memorable "step back in time" experience. You'll marvel at the detail and authenticity that went into the building of this movie set and museum.

Note: Due to lack of availability, western actors will not be a part of the field trip this year.

There is no food served at Gammons Gulch so bring water and a lunch.  You can eat lunch in the saloon or outside in a nice picnic area.

It is highly suggested that you wear closed-toed shoes, brimmed hats, use sunscreen, and bring bottled water.

After lunch we will take a 2–3-minute drive to the Forever Home Donkey Rescue & Sanctuary. The Sanctuary has provided a loving home for donkeys since 1998. Many of these intelligent & beautiful animals have health issues because of neglect in their past. Others are in their 20s and 30s, requiring extra care and special feeds to keep them healthy.

The donkeys are roaming on 10 acres, and you can take pictures to your heart's content. If the donkeys don't want to come see you, you can walk within the Sanctuary to see them. If you have trouble walking, the Sanctuary will take you to them on a four-wheeler bike. Three of the caretakers will be available to answer any questions and tell you the donkeys' stories--if you could understand what the donkeys have to say. The tour will last about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Contact Danny Valenzuela at 602-568-5759 or dvsundevil@gmail.com with any questions.

Meet at the upper-level parking lot at Photography Club at 8:15 AM for departure/carpooling at 8:30 AM to Gammons Gulch. GVR is requiring that every person participating in club's field trips sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography Club before the trip departs if you haven't already done so. We expect to leave the Donkey Sanctuary at approximately 3 pm.

If you need to cancel, please contact the Field Trip Coordinator Lynn Rozema at lrozema51@gmail.com We may have people on the wait list to take your place.

Last refund date is October 24, 2025

Previously called the Roundup & Open House (2000-2017), the Festival also showcases Bureau of Land Management and Empire Ranch Foundation’s efforts to preserve the Empire Ranch for future generations. Enjoy Western heritage demonstrations including wild horse and burro training, cowboy mounted shooting, silversmithing, telegraphy, falconry; arena and livestock exhibits; cowboy cooking and Western entertainment. This event features many opportunities to capture live action shots and videos. You can even register directly with Empire Ranch for a 45-minute trail ride ($50 per rider).

Find more information about the Cowboy Festival here

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 8:30 AM for carpooling, departing at 9:00 AM. In previous festivals, hay bales were often used for seating during some of the events so please dress accordingly. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge, if available. For those carpooling, $15.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

Most of the rooms of the Empire Ranch House are wheelchair accessible through the breezeway (zaguán) entrance, as are most of the other buildings/structures. The public restrooms, located north of the Ranch House, are wheelchair accessible. The terrain around the Empire Ranch headquarters is primarily dirt with uneven surfaces that can be challenging for some mobility scooters.

Pima Air and Space Museum – Wednesday 11/19/2025

    Trip Cost $30.00

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must register for this trip no later than October 17th so we can finalize our group reservation. We also need at least 15 people to register by then or we will have to cancel this trip.

Take a tour of one of the largest non-governmental air and space museums in the world. You’ll be fascinated by approximately 400 historical aircraft and spacecraft from the United States and around the world. Learn more about the museum here.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 7:45 AM for carpooling, departure at 8:15 AM. Wear comfortable shoes and a hat or sunshade, sunscreen and water. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

The field trip will begin with a docent-led, 45-minute private walking tour of the museum’s three World War II hangars, featuring bombers such as the B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell and B-29 Superfortress; fighters like the P-51 Mustang and P-40 Warhawk; and transport and utility aircraft such as the C-47 Skytrain.

From there, you’re free to explore the museum and its grounds on your own. You can purchase a ticket for a public, 45-minute narrated tram tour of the 80-acre outdoor display area. You’ll see more than 150 aircraft on this 1 ½ mile circuit. The tram tour does not stop for photographs, but you’ll have plenty of opportunities for some great outdoor shots, so keep your camera or smartphone handy. Be sure to look for the latest additions to the museum’s collection – including a replica of the infamous X-15 carried under the wing of its actual B-52 mothership “The High and the Mighty.”

You’re also welcome to explore the museum’s vast indoor collection, including the Spirit of Freedom Hangar (Hangar 1) featuring many historic and iconic aircraft as well as the Flight Grill and Museum Store, and the Aerospace Gallery featuring the capsule from the movie Apollo 13, exhibits highlighting the space race, and the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame.

Included in our admission and not to be missed, the 390th Bomb Group Museum features a fully restored B-17 Flying Fortress, along with many other World War II artifacts.

THIS TOUR WILL INVOLVE EXTENSIVE WALKING AND STANDING.

You may bring your own water, but no outside food or beverages are allowed. You can have lunch on your own at the Flight Grill. The typical museum visit is 3-4 hours, but you are welcome to stay as long as you want; the museum closes at 5:00 PM.

Tom Parker will be our trip leader. Contact Tom at 618-304-1456 or tparker324@aol.com with any questions. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

Rancho de la Osa (includes lunch) --

    Wednesday 11/19/2025

    Cost: $25

Prior to arriving at Rancho de La Osa, we will venture to the Sasabe Border Port of Entry. The U. S. Customs and Border Protection Supervisor will provide some information about the port of entry and the border wall. There are great photo opportunities for photos of the wall.

From there we stop at the Sasabe General Store for refreshments. Deborah, the fourth-generation owner, will open the unique Hill-Top Bar, located at the rear of the store. It is a uniquely designed bar with great photo opportunities.

Then we will proceed to Rancho de las Osa, an historic ranch and sportsman's paradise, situated on 590 acres and surrounded by an additional 120,000 acres of the Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge in Sasabe, AZ. It is really a true and historic place made up of luxurious adobe guest rooms, Mexican antiques and vintage furniture and a perfect location for horseback riding, wildlife photography and more.

A long list of historical people stayed here; John Wayne (guest room 10), Margaret Mitchell (author of Gone with the Wind), Poncho Villa, and several US presidents. On April 3,1948, President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act of 1948. It became known as the Marshall Plan, named for Secretary of State George Marshall, who in 1947 proposed that the United States provide economic assistance to restore the economic infrastructure of postwar Europe.  You may fall in love and want to come back to stay or maybe have a reunion at the ranch.

It is highly recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and bottled water.

Lunch will be a buffet of assorted items. Please inform the Danny no later than November 14th if there are dietary restrictions. A cash bar is available prior to lunch.

Bird/Nature Photography: Rancho Santa Cruz/Santa Gertrudis Lane  Tuesday 12/16/2025

Cost:  Free but you must register to attend

There are many excellent birding and nature photography opportunities nearby these locations.  Rancho Santa Cruz and Santa Gertrudis Lane are excellent spots to see berry-eating birds as well as view birds bathing in the Santa Cruz River.

If you have binoculars, you may want to bring them along. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings if you wish to do so.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Participants need to be comfortable walking on trails of mostly flat, uneven terrain.  A hat and water are suggested.

Lunch details will be provided via email when we get closer to the event.

Meet at the Photography Club at 8:30 AM for carpooling.  If you are going to carpool with someone, the minimum donation for gas should be $5.00. We will leave promptly at 8:45 for Rancho Santa Cruz/Santa Gertrudis Lane.

GVR requires that every person participating in Photography Club Field Trip must sign a one-time waiver absolving GVR of any liability. You may sign the waiver at the Photography Club or the morning of the trip, if you have not completed one already.

Denise LeCount-O'Brien will be leading this trip.  Please contact Denise at (309) 830-0177 or email rurt2dede@gmail.com if you have any questions.

If you need to cancel prior to the day of the trip, please contact Lynn Rozema, Field Trip Co-Chair at 719-351-5193 or email at lrozema51@gmail.com as soon as possible. We may have people on the wait list to take your place.

Winterhaven Festival of Lights by Party Bike – Sunday 12/21/2025

    Trip Cost $38

IMPORTANT NOTE: We've had enough members sign up to fill one party bike. We're looking to fill up a second bike. If you haven't done so already, you must sign up no later than October 20th so we can reserve a second party bike – they sell out quickly!

Since 1949 the Winterhaven Festival of Lights has grown to become a Tucson Tradition - one of the longest running festivals of its kind in the country. The Festival of Lights celebrates the holiday season in Tucson and is visited by hundreds of thousands of people from all over southern Arizona. In the past, one day was set aside to allow people to drive through the neighborhood, but there are no drive-through dates this year. Your choices are limited. You can walk or you can take a trolley tour.

Or better yet, you can take a pedal-powered group bike - the “funnest” way to experience the amazing Winterhaven Festival of Lights! We’ll pedal a 14-passenger party bike on a 45-minute Winterhaven ride and enjoy the festival’s sights while our captain steers. LED lights and pop Christmas music will provide a great ambiance for the ride. The captain will make one to two stops inside the festival so we can get a closer look at the displays and take photos. And yes, you do have to pedal but the bike has a pedal-assist motor so it’s easier than it looks. Check out a short video about the Winterhaven Festival and the Arizona Party Bike here.

Additional information about the Winterhaven Festival of Lights is available here.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 2:30 PM for carpooling, departure at 3:00 PM. Dress warmly and wear comfortable close-toed shoes. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

Prior to the tour, participants are invited to an optional no-host dinner at Shooters, located at 3115 East Prince Road in Tucson. Arizona Party Bikes will pick us up at Shooters. Details will be provided once the reservation is confirmed.

Tom Parker will be the trip leader. For questions call Tom at 618 304-1456 or email at tparker324@aol.com. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

GVR requires that every person participating in club's field trips must sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  You will be required to sign the waiver at the Photography club before the trip departs.

If you need to cancel, please contact the Field Trip Co-chair Lynn Rozema at 719-351-5193 or email lrozema51@gmail.com.  We may have people on the wait list to take your place.  On the morning of the trip, please call Tom and Lynn as soon as you know you cannot make the trip.

Reid Park Zoo Behind-the-Scenes AND ZooLights! - Tuesday 12/23/2025

    Trip Cost $55.00

Get up close and personal with some of your favorite Reid Park Zoo residents. During this 60-minute behind-the-scenes adventure, you’ll learn how Reid Park Zoo uses proper nutrition and health care to provide quality, whole-life care to its animal residents. Your experience includes visits to the Animal Health Center, Zoo kitchen, and rhino habitat. During a special close encounter with the rhino, you will discover the importance of animal training for completing daily health checkups. You’ll have ample time before the behind-the-scenes adventure to explore other parts of the Zoo on your own.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 10:30 AM for carpooling, departing at 11:00 AM. We’ll be outdoors for most of the day and into the evening, so please dress accordingly. Comfortable shoes are a must and bottled water is suggested. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge, if available. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

We’ll drive to the Zoo, where free parking is provided for Zoo guests. We’ll assemble outside the admission gate for a group photo. You’ll have about 2 1/2 hours before we start the behind-the-scenes experience to explore the Zoo on your own or chill out and grab a bite at the Flamingo Grill. Make sure you’re at the Giraffe Encounter no later than 2:20 PM so we can start the behind-the-scenes experience on time. Since the behind-the-scenes group size is limited to 10 people, we’ll divide the group between two Zoo educators, but don’t worry -- each group will share the same experience.

Hand-held cameras and smartphones are welcome, but Go-Pros, selfie sticks and other equipment that could potentially be stuck into animal habitats or over guardrails are not allowed. There are also areas of the Zoo where photography is not permitted: Zoo educators will advise you where photography is not allowed. The behind-the-scenes experience should end around 3:30 PM.

Following the behind-the-scenes adventure, participants are invited to a no-host dinner at the Polish Cottage Restaurant located at 4520 East Broadway Boulevard in Tucson. We’ll depart the restaurant around 5:30 PM to be sure we get back to the Zoo in time. “In time for what?” you may ask.

ZooLights: Holiday Magic of course! Stroll through a wonderland of displays, falling snow, live entertainment and festive fun with over a million dazzling lights – perfect backdrops for your holiday photos. Most of the animals will be sleeping and out of public view, so you can enjoy your regular or hi-test cocoa and not feel guilty. You’re welcome to stay as long as you want, or at least until the Zoo closes.

The trip cost covers zoo admission, the behind-the-scenes experience and admission to ZooLights!

The tour involves extensive walking and standing. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour challenging.

Additional information about the Reid Park Zoo is available here.

Tom Parker will be our trip leader. Contact Tom at 618-304-1456 or tparker324@aol.com with any questions. He will be disseminating more information to registered participants via e-mail as we get closer to the event.

Trip Cost: $15.00 (Please Note: Do not wear perfumes, scented lotions or glitter since the studio is a glitter- and scent-free space.)

Odaiko Sonora is Tucson's taiko, or Japanese ensemble drumming group. Serving southern AZ since May 2002, Odaiko Sonora is dedicated to increasing familiarity with and understanding of taiko in our community. They do this each year through classes and master workshops, performances, school residencies, team building workshops and by producing concerts that include internationally acclaimed taiko artists. Learn more about Odaiko Sonora here

Taiko is most beautiful when players are performing in unison, with musicality and proper technique, striving for accuracy and focus. With over 60 appearances — for over 150,000 people each year — these players are committed to taiko as a performing art form. Performances vary from outdoor festivals to private parties to staged theatrical productions. Dedication, rigorous training, creative contribution, flexibility and a great attitude define these players. As with most things, practice makes perfect!

We’ll have a rare opportunity to observe, photograph and video one of Odaiko Sonora’s Community Group practice sessions. Their Community Group is for players who wish to work together as a group to increase skill levels, expand their repertoire, and work towards community performances 3–5 times a year. Titan Missile Museum – Wednesday 02/18/2026

    Trip Cost $20.00

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must sign up no later than January 20th so we can finalize our group reservation.

At the Titan Missile Museum, visitors journey through time to stand on the front line of the Cold War. This preserved Titan II missile site is all that remains of the 54 Titan II missile sites that were on alert across the United States from 1963 to 1987. The Titan II was capable of launching from its underground silo in 58 seconds and could deliver a nine-megaton thermonuclear warhead to its target more than 6,000 miles away in less than thirty minutes.

This one-of-a kind museum gives visitors a rare look at the technology used by the United States to deter nuclear war. What was once one of America’s most top-secret places is now a National Historic Landmark, fulfilling its new mission of bringing Cold War history to life for millions of visitors from around the world. Learn more about the museum
    here.

On our 45-minute guided tour, you’ll descend 35 feet into the missile complex, visit the launch control center, and experience a simulated launch of the missile. Then you’ll journey down the cableway to level 2 of the missile silo to get an up-close look at the Titan II missile itself. Note: This portion of the field trip involves extensive standing and walking, including descending and ascending 55 stair steps. There is no elevator access. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour challenging. You can still enjoy the surface portion of the missile site.

On the surface, visitors will see the alarm systems that secured the missile silo door, an up-close view of the missile’s engine, and tour a variety of vehicles relevant to silo and site as well as other Air Force operations. The silo doors are open enough to look down into the 146-foot missile silo and see the Titan II Missile standing tall as it did on Alert for over 20 years. Be sure to check out the Education and Research Center and the museum’s gift shop. We’ll have about an hour to explore the grounds and topside museum.

Non-commercial photography and video recording are permitted, although flash photography, selfie sticks and tripods are prohibited.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 9:15 AM for carpooling, departure at 9:45 AM. Please wear comfortable shoes and your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge if you have one. For those carpooling, $2.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

Following the tour, participants are invited to a no-host lunch at El Patio Mexican Restaurant, located at 100 West Duval Mine Road in Sahuarita, AZ, where the trip will end about 1:30 PM.

The tour involves extensive walking, stairs, and standing. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour challenging.

    Reid Park Zoo Behind-the-Scenes - Friday 02/20/2026

    Trip Cost $40.00

Get up close with some of your favorite Reid Park Zoo residents. During this 60-minute behind-the-scenes adventure, you will learn how Reid Park Zoo uses proper nutrition and health care to provide quality, whole-life care for its animal residents. Your experience includes visits to the Animal Health Center, Zoo kitchen, and rhino habitat. During a special close encounter with the rhino, you will discover the importance of animal training for completing daily health checkups. The trip cost covers both the zoo admission and the behind-the-scenes experience.

We’ll meet at the Photography Club upper-level parking lot at 7:45 AM for carpooling, departing at 8:15 AM. Comfortable shoes and water are suggested. Please wear your GVR Photography Club or Camera Club badge, if available. For those carpooling, $5.00 is an appropriate contribution to the driver.

We'll drive to the Zoo, where free parking is provided for Zoo guests. We'll assemble at the large Zoo sign outside the admission gate for a group photo, just in time for the Zoo’s opening at 9:00 AM. We will have about an hour before we start the behind-the-scenes experience, so you’ll have some time to get close to some of your favorite animals, check out the aviaries, and experience the Giraffe Encounter (where you can feed a giraffe for a nominal fee). Make sure you’re at the Giraffe Encounter no later than 10:20 AM so we can start the behind-the-scenes experience on time.

The behind-the-scenes experience should end around noon.

The tour involves extensive walking and standing. Club members with mobility issues may find this tour challenging.

After your behind-the-scenes visit you’re welcome to spend the rest of the day at the Zoo, exploring on your own. You can also join us for a no-host lunch at the Hungry Fox Restaurant & Country Store located at 4637 East Broadway Boulevard in Tucson, where the trip will end around 2:00 PM. If you plan to go back to the Zoo following lunch, be sure to have your hand stamped at the Zoo’s entry gate.

Though outside food is not permitted in the Zoo, the Flamingo Grill located in the Zoo’s Welcome Plaza features a variety of reasonably priced menu items. You may also choose to bring your own food and picnic in one of the many areas just outside the Zoo in Reid Park – just be sure to check at the front gate before exiting if you plan on returning to the Zoo later in the day. Bottled water is always permitted in the Zoo.

Additional information about the Reid Park Zoo is available here.
